- Description
Oamul Lu is a Shanghai-based painter whose work explores how everyday life can become a space for quiet reflection. Beginning with ordinary interiors, gardens and fleeting observations, his paintings gradually dissolve the boundaries between domestic space, memory and nature.
A formative element in Lu’s practice is the experience of growing up in a room without a window. He has described painting as an opening rather than a representation — a way of creating access to the world and re-encountering familiar things through imagination and attention. While painting remains central to his work, Lu also moves across animation and ceramics, using different media to explore time, perception and the act of looking.
His visual language is intimate and dreamlike but also highly accessible, giving his work a resonance beyond the conventional contemporary-art audience. That crossover has helped make Lu a breakout figure in modern Chinese visual culture. His imagery has found relevance across art, design and fashion, reaching collectors and creative audiences who may not necessarily engage with contemporary painting through traditional institutions alone.
