As the daughter of Ye and Kim Kardashian, North West is one of the most famous Gen Alphas in the world — and her latest looks have reignited discussion around a “mall goth” revival. Think blue hair, spiked accessories and grunge band T-shirts. The Los Angeles-based 13-year-old’s layered black separates, oversized cargos, Rick Owens sneakers and Balenciaga accessories reference a style that peaked long before she was born. Yet, that chronological disconnect is precisely what defines Gen Alpha. Rather than inheriting subcultures through music scenes or shopping malls, today's youngest consumers discover them simultaneously on TikTok and Xiaohongshu (also known as Rednote), where every era exists at once. Mall goth emerged in North America in the late 1990s and early 2000s as a commercialized offshoot of alternative youth culture, borrowing visual cues from goth, nu metal, industrial and emo scenes. Around the same time in Tokyo, punk aesthetics evolved from an underground music subculture into a distinctive street style, particularly in districts such as Harajuku. On social media, nostalgic subcultures like these are reinterpreted for their aesthetics. West’s frequent trips to Tokyo have led some to read her style as anime-inspired, while gothic punk looks are gaining traction among Gen Alpha and Gen Z across East Asia, appearing regularly on Xiaohongshu. Filtered through an internet-native generation, gothic aesthetics are developing a cyberpunk edge. Goth vs Chinese Gen Alpha “The interesting thing about gothic aesthetics in China, the way I see it, is that it’s usually not just goth, it’s a whole soup of different influences — goth, emo, shamate (杀马特) all crammed into one,” said Greg Grigorian, Editor-in-Chief of Pop Mart’s play/GROUND Magazine. But the trend says less about the return of a forgotten subculture than it does about how Gen Alpha consumes fashion: this is a generation that curates and reinvents nostalgia rather than experiencing it firsthand. Rednote, the Xiaohongshu where Chinese youth trends sprawl, shows the scale of the shift: #gothic (哥特) has surpassed 1 billion impressions, #electronicY3K has accumulated 731.3 million and #wastelandstyle 385.8 million. By comparison, #mallgoth has generated just 284,700 impressions, while #pastelgoth sits at 497,000. While Chinese Gen Alpha and Gen Z consumers are not searching for mall goth specifically, they gravitate toward broader digital aesthetics that combine cyber futurism, post-apocalyptic styling and early-2000s nostalgia into something entirely new. Independent mainland streetwear labels popular among Gen Alpha, such as Esoteric Thing, MasonPrince and Rocksteady, are tapping the younger generation’s taste for the gothic. A technological dystopia That hybridization reflects a broader shift in how Gen Alpha approaches fashion. Instead of treating subcultures as fixed identities, these consumers sample visual codes from multiple eras, remixing them into algorithm-friendly aesthetics. Y2K nostalgia, cyber references and dystopian futurism now coexist within the same wardrobe. “Ideaologically, too, it’s quite far from what goths used to be in 2000s,” said Grigorian. “Its current roots are almost anti-aspirational.” Electronic Y3K illustrates this evolution particularly well. Unlike Y2K’s optimism about technology, Y3K imagines a hyper-digital future shaped by AI, gaming and virtual worlds. It speaks to a generation that has never known life without smartphones or recommendation algorithms. For them, digital culture is the environment in which fashion exists. “With the Chinese middle class growing and more people trying to build a tasteful, affluent lifestyle, what the youth are doing is basically a rebellion against that, rooted in things that the mass market considers ‘tacky,’ ‘tasteless,’” he said. This rebellion helps explain why North West’s wardrobe feels contemporary despite referencing a subculture from two decades ago. It also arrives at an interesting moment for luxury: as premium brands promote quiet luxury and refined minimalism, younger consumers are embracing darker, deliberately excessive aesthetics. Oversized silhouettes, distressed fabrics and chaotic layering offer a visual rejection of polished perfection without rejecting luxury itself. The tension is particularly visible in China. Names such as Rick Owens and Balenciaga, or talent of Chinese heritage like Didu and Kay Kwok, resonate with younger consumers for the same reason. Their appeal extends beyond gothic references: this is clothing that feels expressive, disruptive and visually distinctive on social media. Grigorian described the movement as “basically punk, but with a nostalgic twist.” That may be the defining characteristic of Gen Alpha fashion consumption. West’s mall goth aesthetic acts as a case study in the next generation’s approach: sampling subcultures rather than joining them. For luxury brands, the opportunity lies in reinterpretation rather than preservation: the winners will be the houses that offer Gen Alpha the richest visual language to make their own.
