Tech by day, DJ by night: Shenzhen’s creative underground

“Shenzhen is way too fast-paced and tech-focused when it comes to artistic inspiration. It just lacks that cultural vibe,” Victor Zhu, an independent fashion designer based in the city, told Jing Daily. “Designers have to slow down and dig deeper on their own, and that’s honestly one of the biggest struggles here.” Zhu’s complaint is among the most common you hear in the city that markets itself as China’s Silicon Valley. The founding myth has it that Shenzhen was a fishing village until 1979. Bao’an County, renamed Shenzhen that year, in fact held some 358,000 people across more than 2,000 villages, with an economy built on salt and oyster farming. Designated China’s first Special Economic Zone in 1980, it grew into a city of 18.24 million at the end of 2025 and the manufacturing engine of the Pearl River Delta, home to the world’s fourth-busiest container port — GDP growth averaging 20.7% a year over the zone’s first four decades, according to the municipal government. Almost nobody in Shenzhen is from Shenzhen. That is both the city’s distinguishing feature and its difficulty: the metropolis that went up after 1979 was built with little reference to what preceded it, and it has had no time to accumulate subcultures or inherited art movements of its own. “Shenzhen has become a place where people from across China and around the world come together, bringing their own experiences and perspectives,” Zhu said. “That mix is a culture in itself — and it’s something no other Chinese city has in quite the same way.” Pop stars Wen Junhui and Cheng Xiao both grew up in Shenzhen, and both left to train in South Korea before debuting there. The city is better known for the companies built inside it than for the artists it has produced. Editing manager at Shenzhen’s Oil, an underground club that opened in the city in 2017, “Zzm” says that the city is more than creative enough, “What it seems to lack is a touch of romance and a sense of humor. We just hope this city doesn’t end up sliding into dystopia.” Oil’s founder, Yangyang (杨杨), framed the shortfall comparatively. “It has potential but I think Shenzhen faces greater challenges. Shanghai has a longer-established cultural infrastructure and a highly developed international network. Chengdu has a distinctive local cultural identity and a more relaxed pace of life, which allows its music and creative communities to grow relatively organically,” she said. Shenzhen is younger and faster than either, she said, and weighted toward business and efficiency. “For a long time, people have mainly viewed Shenzhen as a city of technology, manufacturing and commerce, and it has sometimes been jokingly described as a ‘cultural desert.’ At the same time, Shenzhen is young and inclusive. It attracts large numbers of young people from across China who are capable, ambitious and willing to try new things,” she said. The factory advantage For fashion designers, that speed is the point. Shenzhen anchors China’s womenswear industry — the trade shorthand is that the country’s womenswear looks to Shenzhen, and Shenzhen’s looks to Dalang, the Longhua district cluster where more than 700 fashion companies operate. The city’s fashion sector generated 45.44 billion RMB ($6.3 billion) in added value in 2023, according to the municipal government's industrial cluster plan. “As an independent designer based in SZ, the supply chain system is incredibly helpful,” Zhu said. “It’s super easy to source raw materials and find manufacturers to turn creativity into reality.” In Paris or New York, an independent label’s binding constraint is production: minimum order quantities, distant factories, six-month lead times. A designer in Shenzhen can prototype in an afternoon, walk fabric samples between suppliers in the same district and find a factory willing to run a hundred units. And Shenzhen’s creative output reflects that. The city’s design scene has moved exceptionally fast in technology as generative AI, AR, spatial computing and robotics show up in installations and commercial work, coming to define the city. Designer art toys and character IP remain the reliable driver of retail and gallery foot traffic. The factories have shaped the creative scene in a second way. Much of it is housed inside them. OCT-LOFT anchors the scene. Konka ran a television plant on the site until the electronics group moved out in the late 1990s, leaving early-1980s workshops and dormitories standing empty in what had been Overseas Chinese Town’s eastern industrial zone. Urbanus, the Shenzhen architecture firm, began converting the southern half in August 2004, and the contemporary art museum OCAT opened there the following January. The park was formally inaugurated in May 2006 and opened in full, north and south zones together, in May 2011. Initial construction ran to roughly 30 million RMB ($3.9 million), about two-thirds of it spent on the museum alone. Shopping-bar-restaurant complex Oct-Loft is the anchor. The compound was owned by a Chinese television manufacturer before Shenzhen’s architecture firm Urbanus converted the abandoned plant, opening in 2005 after two years of work and 30 million yuan of investment. It began at around 55,365 sqm with 20 tenant companies. Galleries, design bookshops, cafés, the B10 live music venue and an annual jazz festival now occupy the site. Shenzhen has nothing else on the scale of Beijing’s 798 or Shanghai’s M50, and OCT-LOFT is what it has instead. Nantou complicates the city’s account of itself. Bao’an County was founded in 331 and administered from Nantou for most of the 17 centuries since — the settlement predates the metropolis around it by some 1,650 years. It now serves as Shenzhen’s showcase for heritage-led urban renewal, hosting pop-ups and design exhibitions inside the old county town. Oil, whose staff opened this piece, is the other reference point — nine years old this November, and the venue the city’s underground music scene organizes itself around. “Oil’s audience is relatively young, generally between the ages of 18 and 35,” says Yangyang. “It is also international and highly mobile. Shenzhen borders Hong Kong and is itself a city shaped by migration; many people here come from different parts of China or from overseas. They may not have grown up with the same cultural background, but inside Oil, music can become a shared language.” Resident collective Oil Soundsystem runs to roughly 20 members, whose day jobs sample the city fairly — tech, manufacturing and the rest. “When they step up as DJs, each of them has a distinct musical personality,” Zzm said. "We’re honestly not sure how strongly those personalities connect to their day jobs or their past life trajectories, but we love the state of things when this bunch of distinct characters comes together.” Yangyang made a related point about where Shenzhen’s creative Gen Zers turn up, which is rarely in the places you would look. “Many of them work in technology, product design, gaming, fashion, visual communication, architecture or digital media. Their creativity does not necessarily take the form of becoming full-time artists. They may instead be ‘slashie,’ pursuing creative work as a side profession or parallel identity,” she said. The constraint is time, not talent What holds the scene back is structural rather than a shortage of talent. “Creative communities need time, affordable space and continuity,” Yangyang said. “Shenzhen changes extremely quickly, and independent cultural spaces frequently face high costs and instability. If the city can preserve more room for long-term cultural development, I believe Shenzhen is fully capable of building an influential creative ecosystem.” Doing in Shenzhen what Shanghai or Chengdu manage costs more time, money and effort, Yangyang said. “We have to be very demanding of ourselves just to keep projects alive.” Longevity, not scale, is what separates the survivors. “Where Oil has built its reputation is through consistency,” said Yangyang. “For almost nine years, we’ve kept doing the same thing. Because of that, people know what we stand for. Even if they don’t come every weekend, they know where to find us when they're looking for this kind of experience. [But] perhaps Oil is popular only within a relatively small circle. Otherwise, running it over all these years wouldn't have been such a struggle.” Shenzhen’s creative Gen Zers A club that fills with people under 35 every weekend has a decent vantage on what that cohort is actually like. “The biggest misconception is assuming that all of Gen Z fits more or less into one single profile,” Zzm said. “The misconceptions they face are even greater than those encountered by the millennial generation before them,” Yangyang said. “From the perspective of the wider social and economic environment, they face greater pressure and more serious challenges.” Expectation is its own burden. The assumption Yangyang hears most often about Shenzhen’s Gen Z is that they will be the ones to redefine the city’s culture. “I actually think Gen Z here are incredibly creative, energetic, and resilient. The misconception is that people expect them to constantly push boundaries,” she said. “After living through years of uncertainty, many young people now value stability and predictability much more than previous generations. Even the music they choose often serves as emotional comfort rather than just entertainment.” Behavior at the door bears that out. “The people who still go out regularly, spend freely, and really want to make every night count are often the long-time regulars rather than the younger crowd,” Yangyang said. “That doesn’t mean Gen Z are less passionate, just means they’re making more cautious choices about where they invest their time, energy, and money.” For brands treating Shenzhen’s under-30s as a discretionary-spend engine, that is a correction worth pricing in. Venues like Oil are building something, but the city they are building it in may be one its own young arrivals want to keep as it is. “If someone moves to Shenzhen right after graduating, it’s probably because they appreciate what the city offers: it’s pragmatic, opportunity-driven, and gives people a sense of certainty,” Yangyang said. “I think that mindset shapes this generation more than people realize.” The advantages are structural: the Hong Kong border, a supply chain that collapses the distance between idea and object, a population selected for ambition and a fluency in hardware few cities can match. What the creative scene has instead is underfunding, insecure premises and a membership that mostly works day jobs. “Over time, younger generations will build a cultural identity that’s rooted in Shenzhen itself,” Zhu said. “People often say the city has a weak cultural foundation, but I don’t think that's quite right. Culture isn’t only about inherited traditions.”
