Pen ink, sheep wool: Zegna memories become fragrance

Zegna’s “Memorie” fragrance collection arrived in China on October 12, following a global rollout that began in February. The six scents distill the house’s 116-year Alpine heritage into moments from the life of its founder, Ermenegildo Zegna. Three master perfumers divided the six volumes between them. Dominique Ropion composed Vol. I, Il Calamaio (“the inkwell”), set in the founder’s study at dawn among fresh newsprint and leather-bound notebooks, and Vol. V, La Panoramica, named for the scenic road that winds across Oasi Zegna, the Alpine reserve around Trivero where the founder planted more than 500,000 trees. Fabrice Pellegrin made Vol. II, Il Lanificio (“the wool mill”), from the smell of raw wool at the family mill; Vol. IV, Il Sottobosco (“the undergrowth”), from the forest floor after rain; and Vol. VI, Saga del Piemonte, from evenings by the fire over ratafia, a cherry liqueur traditional to Piedmont. Quentin Bisch composed Vol. III, A Trivero, which starts in the garage where the founder kept his Lancia Aurelia and follows the car out onto Alpine roads. “Memorie” is not Zegna’s first fragrance line. The house launched Essenza di Zegna in 2003 and followed it in 2005 with Z Zegna, a blue-tinted eau de toilette produced under license by YSL Beauté. At the time, luxury menswear labels routinely licensed their names to beauty groups, and department stores filled with designer colognes built for volume. Zegna’s license later passed to Estée Lauder in 2011 and, in November 2023, to Give Back Beauty, the Milan-based group that developed “Memorie” with the house. What has changed is the positioning. Each 100ml “Memorie” eau de parfum sells for 260 euros in Europe and $350 in the US, with 150ml refills available. Distribution is limited to Zegna boutiques, zegna.com and selected department stores and perfumeries, Harrods in London among them. That puts the collection closer to niche perfumery than to the mass designer scents of the 2000s, and it arrives as luxury growth slows and wealthy customers favor discreet, long-lasting purchases. Why Zegna launched luxury fragrance in 2026 Alessandro Sartori, Zegna’s artistic director since 2016, knows the earlier era firsthand: he led the Z Zegna clothing line from 2003 to 2011. “Back [in 2005], it was a different brand,” he said of the house’s mid-2000s fragrance business. This time, the return was slow and deliberate. “Building for the future, we started only when we felt ready,” Sartori said. “We launched one at the beginning, only 300 pieces. A limited edition, starting point. It sold out quickly.” That edition was Il Conte, a numbered run of 300 bottles that Pellegrin created for Zegna’s Villa Zegna event in Dubai in June 2025. Sartori said he designed the six scents as a single story, with no particular market in mind. “Between his private life and his moments, designing fragrances, six was the minimum number to tell the story,” he said. “If you’re thinking too much about what will sell, and what will be specifically good for a certain market, then [the quality] gets lower and you cannot breathe. So trying to get higher, feel and enjoy is what works.” A universal scent collection The spread of styles across the six volumes still gives Zegna something to sell in markets with different tastes, even though Sartori said none was designed for one. China is the clearest case. Chinese fragrance buyers have long leaned toward lighter scents: in a survey by Shanghai brand consultancy Labbrand, more than half of respondents preferred casual, fresh fragrances, and only 3% picked strong, intense ones. Two of the six fit that profile. La Panoramica is a fresh fougère, a fragrance family built on lavender and herbal notes, made with pine needles, French lavender and Haitian vetiver. A Trivero is an aromatic fougère of lavender, Damask rose and myrrh. Elsewhere, Il Calamaio, a leathery amber built on an oud accord and Turkish rose absolute, suits the Middle East, where US fragrance developer OnScent says oud, amber and musk dominate and buyers expect a scent to last. In North America, the same company reports growing appetite for bolder spicy, woody and gourmand profiles alongside the region’s taste for clean scents. Il Sottobosco’s pink pepper, carrot seed and patchouli cover that ground, as does the gourmand warmth of Il Lanificio (vanilla, suede, sandalwood) and Saga del Piemonte (coffee, ratafia, Virginia cedar). That range lets Zegna sell one collection everywhere without building scents market by market. Sartori designs for an international persona rather than a demographic target: “The fragrances are for men with a strong feeling, and a strong aura rather than someone who is perfect,” he said. “Someone who has an amazing suit but is leaning on a chair for 20 minutes before standing up. It’s also a persona who doesn’t feel a need to show off. A traveler, an interesting character. A man with a lot of taste and passion. He’s keeping his jacket for his life, building layers.” To anchor the release, Zegna produced a short film starring its global ambassador, Mads Mikkelsen. Written by Roman Coppola and directed by Boramy Viguier, it was shot at Casa Zegna, the family’s historic home in Oasi Zegna. Each bottle is made of gradient glass and topped with an ash-wood cap bearing the Zegna family crest. The collection has been in development since 2022. “Luxury is the amount of craft and human work into the object. That’s our point of view,” Sartori said.
