More than 10 brands opted to show off-schedule across January and February, diluting calendar cohesion while reinforcing the city’s independent spirit. Designers such as Ryunosuke Okazaki and collectives like Khoki continue to push avant-garde silhouettes and artisanal craft, while labels including Yohei Ohno and Yoshiokubo lean into sharp tailoring and distinctly commercial design. For brands, the event functions more as platform than marketplace. While London Fashion Week has evolved into a strong platform for Chinese designers, Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo supports Japanese designers’ international expansion through the Tokyo Fashion Award and Fashion Prize of Tokyo, which fund showroom placements and runway shows in Paris. Yet structural challenges persist, as with Shanghai Fashion Week — a fragmented calendar that risks diluting buyer focus and limiting commercial efficiency. “As a brand based in Tokyo, choosing to present our show here is, at this stage, the most complete and ideal way for us to fully express our world and vision,” says Japanese designer Viviano. “Through the power of social media, we hope to amplify our presence globally from Tokyo, and with the support of our global PR, continue expanding our brand’s recognition on an international scale.” Yet muted traction on Chinese and Western social platforms points to a gap between cultural relevance and measurable influence. The designer’s show was part of the showcase by Bunka Fashion College, which has produced many renowned designers, and presented its in-house collection "individual.” What Tokyo offers, instead, is distinction.
