A wave of flagship openings, punctuated by a handful of high-profile closures and market debuts, redrew China’s luxury retail map in H1 2026. The first half of the year told two stories about the country’s retail landscape. Luxury houses opened bigger stores, pushed into new cities and locations, and even hosted some pop-ups so creative that they could pass as AI. At the same time, a quieter but equally significant wave of closures swept through the market — department store giants, lingerie empires, and storied European names among them. Here is what happened, month by month. January Harrods exited Shanghai in January, shutting both its Tea Rooms and private members’ club at HKRI Taikoo Hui. Opened in 2021 and 2023, respectively, the two concepts were central to the British retailer’s premium hospitality and retail experiment in the city. February On February 28, Lane Crawford closed its Chengdu IFS location after 12 years, following the downsizing of its Shanghai flagship from four floors to two. March Ralph Lauren celebrated the opening of its first Chinese flagship at Chengdu IFS, a significant commitment from a brand that had previously operated in the market without a signature store. French jeweler Boucheron inaugurated its first flagship in China at Shanghai’s historic Xintiandi district, the brand’s third worldwide after 26 Place Vendôme in Paris and Ginza in Tokyo. That Boucheron prioritized Shanghai for its global expansion says where high-jewelry demand is heading. Balenciaga reopened its expanded flagship at Guangzhou Taikoo Hui on March 27, now spanning 572 square meters. March also brought closures. Victoria’s Secret shut its Shanghai flagship, its first and largest in China. April In Beijing, Michael Kors opened a new flagship at China World mall, featuring the brand’s first Jet Set Lounge in Asia. Also in Beijing, on April 15, Golden Goose unveiled its biggest Asia-Pacific location to date: a 475-square-meter flagship in Taikoo Li Sanlitun. The opening serves as an early indicator of the China-focused expansion plan that incoming majority shareholder HSG has identified as a key driver behind its investment rationale. May French department store Galeries Lafayette closed its Beijing flagship in May, ending its 13-year run in the capital. The closure follows a wider pattern of Western multi-brand retailers struggling to hold ground against domestic competitors and shifting consumer habits. A H1 2026 retail overview H1 delivered a wave of firsts for China’s luxury retail market: Boucheron’s first China flagship in Shanghai, Miu Miu’s expansion into central China, Louis Vuitton introducing a fragrance counter in a China retail format, and Studio Nicholson opening its first mainland store.
