Growing up online: Chinese Gen Alpha creators

Mr. Little Orange started in 2020 as a record of a toddler pulling apart his family’s bathroom. The Douyin account now has more than 22 million followers, a bigger audience than most luxury houses have built on the platform. The child at the center of it is not an outlier. For China’s youngest internet users, video-sharing apps are where they play, learn, shop and talk. A growing number are making the videos as well. Generation Alpha, generally defined as those born from 2010 onward, is growing up in a smartphone-first China where short-form video and livestreaming are part of daily life. Nearly all of them are online. The Communist Youth League and the China Internet Network Information Center counted 196 million internet users under 18 in 2023, with penetration at 97.3%, in the sixth edition of their annual survey, published in November 2024. More than one-third of primary school pupils in that sample had first gone online before starting school. That reach is producing a new kind of young creator. Children now front popular accounts on Douyin, Kuaishou, Bilibili and Xiaohongshu (also known as RedNote). From child stars to ‘mini-experts’ Some of China’s youngest creators have built audiences that would flatter an adult influencer. Children have built audiences around toys, gaming, school life, beauty and family vlogs. Entertainment is only part of it. Some children have become “mini-experts,” using short videos to explain insects, science and law. Others work in traditional Chinese culture: calligraphy, Peking Opera, classical instruments, Hanfu and intangible cultural heritage. Douyin’s own content guidelines for the mode favor these categories, which gives young creators a reason to pick them. Toy unboxings and gaming dominate the child influencer economy in the West, and both exist in China as well. What sits alongside them is the distinction: children turning a hobby or a body of knowledge into a public identity. Much of this is structural. Children under 14 need a guardian’s consent to use Douyin outside its minors mode, and platforms are barred from providing livestream host services to anyone under 16. Many accounts therefore run as family businesses, with parents filming and managing while the child fronts the content. Chinese child influence has settled into a hybrid of family vlog and entertainment channel, with an early personal brand attached. Platform as classroom Regulation in China pushes children’s platform time toward educational content, and that pressure shapes what young creators make. Douyin enrolls users under 14 into a minors mode automatically, based on real-name registration data. The default time lock allows 40 minutes a day across Douyin’s apps, requires a parent-held password to continue past it and blocks the service entirely between 10pm and 6am. Douyin's published terms list calligraphy and painting instruction, traditional culture, humanities explainers and nature science among the content it surfaces there — categories that overlap closely with what its youngest creators are making. One result is a cohort comfortable with shooting short-form video and treating technology as a creative tool from a young age. Older members have started using AI for editing, research and production. Not everyone is convinced the generational break is real. “It is still too early to make strong claims about stable generational patterns,” said Guo Liwei, a Shanghai-based growth and consumer strategy consultant. “What may differ is Gen Alpha’s baseline expectation: talking to AI may feel natural rather than like a new form of interaction they have had to learn.” He described watching his nephew, not yet two, open the ByteDance AI assistant Doubao and ask it for a story, having seen his mother do the same. “He needed almost no instruction,” Guo said. If Gen Alpha grows up treating AI the way it treats a camera or a messaging app, making things online may become a private habit rather than a public performance. From influence to commerce Brands working with these accounts reach two buyers at once: the children watching and the Gen Z or millennial parents holding the card. Toy channels in particular have become commercial operations in their own right, and younger audiences find products through social content and fandom rather than through search or retail. The route is narrower than it looks. Platforms have been barred since 2022 from providing livestream host services to anyone under 16, and regulators have run repeated campaigns against accounts that use children to build traffic and sell goods — leaving brand partnerships on pre-recorded video as a gray zone rather than an open channel. Privacy and consent are hard to separate from the business of family content. A child can draw millions of viewers without understanding that their childhood is being documented permanently, and without any means of withdrawing it later. What is actually shifting is the age at which the line between watching and making disappears. Few of these children will become professional influencers. Most are growing up with an assumption their parents never had: that the internet is somewhere you make things, not just somewhere you watch them. AI will lower the cost of making them.
