China signals: Alo warms up, Kolon takes off, ATHX enters, Hyrox trips up

Four stories capture the energy in China’s sports market. Alo Yoga is running free community classes in Shanghai months before its first mainland stores open. Kolon Sport’s China sales have grown roughly 26-fold since 2020, putting it alongside Arc’teryx and Descente as one of the “middle-class three treasures” — all three now sitting under the Anta umbrella. ATHX, a hybrid fitness competition backed by Adidas, is entering China to fill the gap between Hyrox and CrossFit. And Hyrox faced backlash of its own after commentators mocked Olympic table tennis champion Zhang Jike at its Chengdu race. Alo Yoga: community first, stores later Market intel: Alo Yoga launched an eight-week community program in Shanghai on August 1, its most visible move yet ahead of a mainland retail debut. The free sessions cover run clubs, city walks, outdoor yoga, reformer Pilates, cycling and wellness salons, with the schedule and bookings handled through the brand’s WeChat account. Alo said it will follow with tie-ups across high-end hotels, local fragrance and dermocosmetic brands and other wellness partners. Its first mainland stores are slated for Shanghai’s Jing’an Kerry Centre and Beijing’s Sanlitun Taikoo Li, after a Hong Kong opening at K11 Musea. Market indicator: Building the community before the stores is a slower route than the one Vuori is taking, teasing a Shenzhen debut with wellness spaces attached to physical sites. The bet is that a membership base assembled through free classes converts on day one of retail rather than having to be won afterwards. Lululemon has a decade-plus head start on exactly that work in China, and Alo is pitching to the same affluent, health-conscious buyer with a near-identical premium-wellness position. Whether eight weeks of run clubs and salons can build the density Lululemon took years to reach is the test — and the answer will be visible in the first weeks of trading at Jing'an Kerry Centre. Kolon: the third treasure in Anta’s vault Market intel: Kolon Sport’s China revenue is set to pass 600 billion won ($416 million) in H1 2026, with Korean industry estimates putting full-year China revenue near 1.2 trillion won ($832 million), up 31% year-on-year from 914.1 billion won in 2025. First-half sales have grown roughly 26-fold since 2020. Kolon Sport China, a 50-50 joint venture formed with Anta in 2017, splits the work — Kolon Industries FnC on brand management, product planning and marketing, Anta on distribution and store operations — and has built the brand to about 200 stores nationwide. It now sits alongside Arc’teryx and Descente as one of China’s “middle-class three treasures,” a trio Anta controls in full. Market indicator: The 26-fold rise is eye-catching, but who owns the shelf is equally as important. Anta now controls the three brands Chinese consumers treat as outdoor status markers, which means a shopper trading up from Descente to Arc’teryx rarely leaves the group. Kolon’s role in that portfolio is the mid-tier entry point, and Anta’s store network is what let it reach 200 doors in a market where foreign outdoor labels have historically stalled at distribution. The trade-off is dependence: Kolon Industries FnC owns the brand but not the route to the customer, and the 50-50 structure gives it limited say if Anta’s priorities shift toward the labels it owns outright. ATHX chases Hyrox into China Market intel: British hybrid fitness brand ATHX has entered China, telling local media its debut races will land in Beijing and Shanghai in 2027 and that first-round coach certification is complete in both cities. The move runs off a four-year global partnership with Adidas that is taking ATHX from six events in 2025 to 18 across Europe and the US this year, and a published 2027 schedule of 21 events in 13 countries. Its format splits a 2.5-hour window into six zones — warm-up, strength, refuel, endurance, metcon and recovery — rather than running one continuous race, and the three tests stay fixed across a season. The company pitches that as harder than Hyrox and less technical than CrossFit. Hyrox runs 10 mainland races across eight cities in 2026. Market indicator: Timing is the problem. A 2027 debut puts ATHX in Beijing and Shanghai two full seasons after Hyrox built a mainland calendar, a coach network and the community that fills it — and a domestic challenger, BTWE, has already been launched by a former Hyrox coach to work the same ground. The coach certifications matter more than the race dates for that reason: gyms and trainers are the distribution layer in Chinese fitness, and whoever certifies them first controls who shows up on race day. For Adidas, the logic is category rather than event — Puma holds the Hyrox apparel partnership, leaving Adidas without a flagship hybrid property at the moment hybrid training became the fastest-moving segment in sportswear. Buying into ATHX at global level and following it into China is the cheaper route to one. A meme too far: Hyrox’s Chengdu misstep Market intel: Commentators at the Hyrox Chengdu race on August 1 drew backlash for mocking Zhang Jike, the 2012 Olympic table tennis singles champion, on the event’s official livestream. As Zhang pushed a 152-kilogram sled, they said he “wouldn’t sweat this much on a variety show” and told viewers a screenshot of his expression would make a good meme. Competing in the men’s relay as an invited guest and captain of the Taobao Live team, Zhang finished his legs with abrasions and contusions to his arm and cramping in his legs, having trained for the farmers carry before the assignment was switched on the day. His fan club demanded an investigation, action against those involved and a formal apology. Organizers terminated their agreements with both commentators on August 1. A separate official commentator apologized on air the following morning on behalf of the organizing committee, and Hyrox China issued a written apology that afternoon, pledging tighter commentator vetting and live-content review. Neither of the dismissed commentators has apologized personally. Market indicator: Hyrox sells itself on the line “for everybody,” and its business case rests on it: more than a million people have entered globally, completion rates run at 98% to 99%, and the mainland calendar has gone from three races to 10 in a single season. That growth depends on novices signing up, which makes a novice being mocked on the official stream a commercial problem rather than an etiquette one — and the participant in question was captaining a Taobao Live team, on a broadcast that doubles as a commerce channel. The criticism that has followed, that Hyrox has grown an insider culture with little patience for beginners, cuts directly against the positioning the mainland expansion is built on. Organizers scaling from three races to 10 are also scaling the hours of live commentary they have to stand behind, and the vetting and training Hyrox China has now promised is the cost of running that many broadcasts.
