For this column, I’ve selected 10 that every business leader, investor, and brand strategist should have on their radar. The list is a mix: five established titans who are reinventing their core businesses at massive scale and five rising challengers who are moving from the lab to global markets faster than most people think is possible. The five titans: Reinventing at scale These are the household names, but the reasons they’re on this list for 2026 are not the ones you already know. They are pivoting, expanding, and building the foundational layers for China’s next decade of growth. Huawei Founder: Ren Zhengfei Founded: 1987 Headquarters: Shenzhen What they do: Huawei has evolved from a telecom giant into a company building a self-reliant technology stack. Its portfolio includes Kirin and Ascend AI chips, the Pangu AI model family, the HarmonyOS operating system, and a growing presence in the smart automotive sector, providing full-stack solutions for EV partners. 2025 achievements: The company continued its push for chip self-reliance, ramping up production of its Ascend AI chips. It also open-sourced major Pangu AI models to build a developer ecosystem around its hardware. Meanwhile, EVs from partners, equipped with Huawei’s autonomous driving systems, achieved notable market traction. 2026 focus: Huawei’s core mission is scaling its parallel tech stack. This means expanding Ascend chip production, aiming for 600,000 units, and pushing for wider adoption of its Pangu AI models and HarmonyOS. In a notable move, Huawei recently joined a global consortium with OpenAI and Google to advance AI standards, showing its willingness to engage at the international level while building independent capabilities. Alibaba Founder: Ma Yun Founded: 1999 Headquarters: Hangzhou What they do: While still a major e-commerce player, Alibaba’s most strategic focus is now on cloud computing and AI. Its Alibaba Cloud division is a leading player in Asia, and its Damo Academy is a major research hub. 2025 achievements: Alibaba cemented its role as a global leader in open-source AI by releasing a series of powerful Qwen (Tongyi Qianwen) models. Downloaded hundreds of millions of times, these models deliver performance competitive with top Western models and have driven significant adoption on Alibaba Cloud. Fortune magazine recognized this effort by including Alibaba on its 2025 “Change the World” list. 2026 focus: The push into agentic AI is central. In February 2026, Alibaba unveiled Qwen3.5, a new model family designed to execute complex, multi-step tasks autonomously. The goal is to make its cloud platform the go-to place for developers to build and deploy sophisticated AI agents, moving beyond simple chatbots to create real-world productivity tools. Tencent Founder: Ma Huateng Founded: 1998 Headquarters: Shenzhen What they do: Tencent is the company behind WeChat, the super-app that is the operating system for daily life in China. It is also the world’s largest gaming company and a major player in fintech and cloud services. 2025 achievements: Tencent focused on incorporating its Hunyuan AI model across its entire ecosystem. This included launching Yuanbao, an AI assistant within WeChat, and integrating AI into Tencent Meeting for summaries and transcriptions. The company also rolled out an Agent Development Platform, allowing developers to build their own AI tools on top of Tencent’s infrastructure. 2026 focus: The strategy is to turn WeChat into a fully fledged AI hub. This means embedding a unified AI assistant across chat, search, and mini-programs to handle daily tasks for its 1.3 billion users. For its enterprise clients, Tencent is integrating Hunyuan into WeCom to automate customer service and internal workflows, competing directly with global enterprise copilots. ByteDance Founder: Zhang Yiming Founded: 2012 Headquarters: Beijing What they do: Best known for TikTok and its Chinese counterpart Douyin, ByteDance is fundamentally an algorithm company. It uses machine learning to power content discovery and leverages that capability to fuel its massive, fast-growing e-commerce business. 2025 achievements: In 2025, ByteDance solidified its dominance across AI and commerce. Douyin captured 20% of China's e-commerce market with $720 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV). During the Double 11 shopping festival, over 41,000 merchants using AI tools saw their livestream sales surge more than 5 times. The company also launched OmniHuman, an AI framework achieving 94% lip sync accuracy. TikTok Shop grew massively to $64.3 billion in global GMV as monthly active users surpassed 1 billion. 2026 focus: The goal is to transform TikTok from an entertainment app into a global service platform, adding offerings like food delivery and travel to mirror Douyin’s super-app model in China. This involves deepening its e-commerce infrastructure globally and providing creators with more advanced AI production tools to increase content quality and reach. BYD Founder: Wang Chuanfu Founded: 1995 Headquarters: Shenzhen What they do: BYD started as a battery manufacturer before becoming the world’s largest producer of new-energy vehicles. Its key advantage is its vertical integration — it makes its own batteries, semiconductors, and electric drivetrains, giving it significant cost and supply chain control. 2025 achievements: BYD’s global expansion accelerated, with cumulative sales surpassing 11.9 million vehicles. It launched new models and began rolling out its “God’s Eye” (DiPilot) autonomous driving system across its entire lineup, not just premium models. The company also won Singapore’s first pilot program for Level 4 autonomous buses, showcasing its capabilities beyond passenger cars. 2026 focus: Global expansion is the top priority. After seeing a huge surge in European registrations in January 2026, BYD is actively looking at new factory locations in Europe and other regions to localize production. The company is also focused on democratizing smart driving features, using the data from millions of cars on the road to rapidly improve its DiPilot system. Want to see this firsthand? They are less known internationally but are setting the pace in categories that will define the next decade. DeepSeek Founder: Liang Wenfeng Founded: 2023 Headquarters: Hangzhou What they do: DeepSeek is an independent AI research lab that burst onto the global scene by building open-source, cost-efficient large language models that rival the world’s best. 2025 achievements: The company released its R1 reasoning model, which delivered GPT-4-class performance at a fraction of the training cost. This event was widely seen as a “Sputnik moment” for the AI industry, proving that top-tier models could be built with algorithmic ingenuity rather than just massive compute budgets. 2026 focus: DeepSeek continues to push the frontier of open-source AI while making strategic moves. The company is reportedly withholding its upcoming V4 model from U.S. chipmakers, instead granting early optimization access to Huawei’s Ascend chips. The move signals a focus on building a robust AI software ecosystem that is less dependent on U.S. technology. Unitree Robotics Founder: Wang Xingxing Founded: 2016 Headquarters: Hangzhou What they do: Unitree is a global pioneer in high-performance quadruped and humanoid robots. It follows a DJI-like strategy of democratizing advanced robotics by offering high-performance machines at accessible prices. 2025 achievements: The company became a household name in China after 16 of its humanoid robots performed a synchronized folk dance on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, the country’s most-watched TV event. Its low-cost quadruped robots (starting around $2,700) have also gained significant traction in research labs worldwide. 2026 focus: Scale. After a follow-up performance at the 2026 Spring Festival Gala featuring robots performing martial arts, the company announced plans to ship as many as 20,000 humanoid robots this year. The goal is to move robots from novelty items to practical tools for everyday utility in factories, offices, and homes. Game Science Founder: Feng Ji Founded: 2014 Headquarters: Hangzhou What they do: Game Science is the studio behind Black Myth: Wukong, China’s first globally acclaimed AAA-quality video game. The company focuses on creating premium, story-driven games for PC and consoles that draw on Chinese culture and mythology. 2025 achievements: Following the massive success of Black Myth: Wukong’s release in 2024, the company expanded into lifestyle branding with a physical store in Hangzhou and began work on its next major project. 2026 focus: Building a franchise. In August 2025, Game Science confirmed its next title, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, which will be released on PC and all mainstream consoles, though no release date has been announced. The studio is proving that a relatively small, well-supported team can produce cultural exports with global reach and hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. BrainCo Founder: Han Bicheng Founded: 2015 Headquarters: Hangzhou & Cambridge, MA What they do: Founded out of the Harvard Innovation Labs, BrainCo is a leader in non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. It develops wearable devices that use electroencephalogram (EEG) sensors to interpret neural and muscle signals, allowing users to control smart prosthetic limbs. 2025 achievements: The company began full production of its smart bionic hands and legs, which allow amputees to perform fine motor tasks like writing and typing. These prosthetics, which have received FDA clearance, are priced significantly lower than many imported alternatives, making the technology more accessible. 2026 focus: BrainCo is focused on expanding the applications of its BCI technology beyond prosthetics into areas like cognitive training and wellness. Its dual presence in Hangzhou (for manufacturing) and Cambridge (for research) gives it a unique advantage in bridging cutting-edge science with scalable production. Keenon Robotics Founder: Li Tong Founded: 2010 Headquarters: Shanghai What they do: Keenon is a global market leader in commercial service robots, particularly autonomous delivery robots for the restaurant and hospitality industries. Its Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) subscription model has been key to its wide adoption. 2025 achievements: Keenon launched advanced humanoid robots (XMAN-F1 and XMAN-R1) capable of guest interaction and service tasks. These are now deployed at Shanghai’s Shangri-La Traders Hotel, which is being billed as the world’s first smart hotel staffed by a mix of humanoid and specialized robots. 2026 focus: Global expansion and product diversification. Having already deployed robots in over 600 cities across 60 countries, Keenon is now expanding into new regions like the Caribbean. The company is also moving beyond simple delivery to more complex service tasks, aiming to make robotic automation a standard feature in the hospitality industry. The bottom line China's tech story is no longer about catching up. It’s about setting the pace.
