- Description
Mario Tsai is a Chinese product designer and the founder of Mario Tsai Studio and the design brand MARIO TSAI. He began working independently in 2014, establishing a practice that would eventually move beyond conventional design consultancy into a more self-directed research model. In 2019, Tsai repositioned the studio from a service-oriented business toward one driven by research and independent development, while simultaneously launching the eponymous brand MARIO TSAI.
The shift allowed him to work across design, art, R&D, production and commerce without being confined to a single professional category. His methodology is built around four recurring steps: formulating questions, making intuitive judgments, developing research methods and establishing systems. Projects such as the Mazha Lighting System and Soft Power reflect a fascination with engineering, efficient structure and the potential of systems thinking to generate new forms.
Tsai’s work is guided by a humanistic philosophy rather than a purely commercial one. By treating technical research and intuitive judgment as equally important, he has developed a practice that represents a broader evolution in contemporary Chinese design — one increasingly defined by original methodology, engineering literacy and independent intellectual frameworks.
