Why China’s silver beauty market is finally taking off

On a recent evening, South Korean content creator Ava Lee, known online as @Glowwithava, films her latest skincare routine — but the focus is not on herself. Instead, the camera turns to her mother. At over 60 years old, Lee’s mother demonstrates her daily regimen with practiced ease, her complexion visibly luminous. The video quickly draws attention, not only among Lee’s 927,000 Instagram followers, but also on Chinese social platform Xiaohongshu (also known as RedNote), where users dissect every step of the routine. Her mother has since launched her own account, @Jelloskinmom, amassing more than 12,900 followers on Instagram — modest by influencer standards, but notable for a demographic long overlooked by the beauty industry. The appeal is immediate. For younger audiences, it is aspirational proof of what aging can look like. For older viewers, it is something rarer: representation. Across platforms, similar dynamics are playing out. From Xiaohongshu tutorials to Douyin livestreams, older creators are quietly building influence, sharing skincare knowledge and personal routines. Comment sections fill with questions — from peers seeking advice, or from younger users asking on behalf of their parents. Behind these seemingly casual exchanges lies a structural shift. China’s silver beauty economy, once peripheral, is moving into focus. Rise of silver beauty as China’s next growth engine For years, China’s beauty industry has been preoccupied with Gen Z, trend cycles, and the churn of youth-driven categories. But a quieter shift is taking shape across platforms like Douyin, Xiaohongshu, and WeChat Channels, where older creators are building loyal audiences and reshaping how beauty is consumed. The market logic is becoming harder to ignore. China’s State Information Center shows the country’s silver economy reached 8.3 trillion RMB ($1.2 trillion) in 2024 and is projected to exceed 20 trillion RMB ($2.9 trillion) by 2030. Meanwhile, China’s population aged 60 and above stood at 310.3 million at the end of 2024, 22% of the total. Beauty is emerging as a meaningful slice of that spending. Alibaba data shows silver beauty GMV reached 44.1 billion RMB ($6.4 billion) in 2024, while surveys of consumers aged 50 to 70 in top-tier cities indicate 100% use skincare products, with 23% spending more than 4,000 RMB ($580) annually. “China’s silver beauty economy is a real growth engine that brands cannot ignore,” says Hwee Chung, China beauty insight director at Worldpanel. “Not only is the population aging, but both participation and spending are on an uptrend. Fifty-plus consumers’ average spending is only 77% of the total population’s, which indicates headroom for further expansion.” Yet, for all the rising attention, the category remains early — shaped less by established beauty groups and more by fast-moving social commerce. From breakout moment to structural growth story The first phase of China’s silver beauty boom has been unmistakably platform-led. Douyin-native brands such as Meishi and Kaweiduo have scaled rapidly by targeting older shoppers with functional claims around spot correction, wrinkle reduction, and herbal efficacy. Their growth has been striking. Third-party data shows Meishi generated 1.4 billion RMB ($203 million) in GMV across major platforms in the first 10 months of 2025, up 51% year-on-year, while Kaweiduo reached 948 million RMB ($138 million), surging 758% over the same 10-month period. Underlying this growth is a fundamental shift in media consumption. A report titled The Blue Ocean of New Consumer Power shows Douyin’s penetration among users aged 55 to 59 has reached 76%, with short video becoming the dominant content format. Combined with algorithm-driven distribution, this has become the primary acquisition engine for silver-focused brands. “China’s silver beauty economy is moving from a Douyin-led breakout phase to a structural growth story, but it’s not fully mature yet,” says Lisa Zhang, a China beauty industry analyst. “The demand fundamentals are strong since China’s silver economy is projected to exceed 20 trillion RMB ($2.9 trillion) by 2030, making it one of the largest globally. However, current momentum is still over-concentrated in fast-moving content-commerce ecosystems rather than industry-wide transformation.” That distinction matters. Today’s growth is concentrated in a narrow set of platforms and playbooks, even as the demographic composition of consumers is already shifting. Miro Li, founder of Double V Consulting, argues that the market visible today is only an early version of what silver beauty will become. “This is definitely a long-term trend, not just a moment,” she says. “But what’s important to understand is that the silver beauty market we see today will look very different in five to 10 years.” Right now, much of the market is driven by consumers born in the 1960s and 1970s — a generation with limited exposure to beauty education or brand culture. That helps explain the success of mass-accessible, Douyin-native brands. But the next cohort will be different. “In the next five to 10 years, the ‘silver generation’ will increasingly be made up of 1980s- and 1990s-born consumers,” Li says. “They know what L’Oréal, Estée Lauder, Shiseido are. They understand branding, they accept premium pricing, and they actually care about efficacy and ingredients.” Unmet needs extend beyond anti-aging So far, demand has been heavily concentrated in skincare, particularly brightening, dark spot correction, and anti-wrinkle products. But the broader opportunity lies in how inadequately the market addresses the complexity of aging consumers. “There is still a significant gap in functional, problem-specific solutions tailored to aging skin,” Zhang says. “Consumers aged 50 and over face multiple, overlapping issues, including dryness, sagging, and pigmentation, requiring more targeted and holistic formulations.” She adds that categories such as skin cracking, extreme dryness, and odor management remain largely underserved. At the same time, demand is already expanding beyond skincare. Offline scenarios reveal a strong appetite for makeup among older consumers. Companies organizing activities such as square dancing competitions or senior art events often monetize through on-site makeup services priced from 150 RMB ($22) to several hundred RMB, with more than half of participants willing to pay. On social media, this shift is becoming increasingly visible. Douyin’s “fashion grandma” collectives — groups of retired women staging runway shows and performances — are reshaping perceptions of aging and fueling interest in beauty and self-presentation. Platform data reinforces the speed of change. From January 2023 to January 2024, Douyin’s middle-aged and elderly skincare index surged 1,550%, with related search volumes rising by at least 185.71%. Terms such as “anti-wrinkle sets for ages 50-60” have become trending keywords. Li also highlights a less discussed but equally critical gap: product design. “Age-friendly product design is still quite underdeveloped in China,” she says. “Very few brands are designing with older hands, weaker eyesight, or different skin textures in mind. That’s a real gap.” Chung agrees, but cautions against overcorrection. “Nobody wants to think of themselves as ‘old,’” she says. “Age-friendly design needs to be approached carefully, but elements like larger fonts and easy opening can improve accessibility.” Why Douyin-native brands moved first The speed of white-label and founder-led brands has exposed a structural blind spot for the industry. Earlier attempts by established players — including Shangmei’s PP2A line and Liby-backed brands — struggled due to vague positioning and weak product-market fit, with some fading from mainstream platforms altogether. In contrast, newer entrants have moved with precision. “Douyin-native brands move faster because they are highly focused and platform-native,” Zhang says. “They target the silver segment as a clear vertical and execute with precision.” Li points to a more emotional dynamic. “Their content is more accessible and more emotionally triggering,” she says. “When there’s a real person behind the brand, someone relatable who speaks their language, it creates a kind of trust and emotional connection that big international brands just can’t easily replicate.” This trust is often built through founder-led storytelling — a model that has proven particularly effective with older consumers who are both time-rich and value-conscious. Beyond ‘anti-aging’ narratives As the market evolves, branding strategies are also being forced to shift. “The key shift is from age as a flaw to age as a differentiated consumer segment with its own aesthetics and needs,” Zhang says. “Winning brands move away from ‘anti-aging’ narratives and instead focus on functionality, representation, and lifestyle alignment.” This aligns with broader industry moves. In 2025, L’Oréal introduced its “Beauty of Longevity” concept, reframing beauty as part of a longer, healthier life rather than something to reverse or conceal. Chung reinforces this generational update. “Brands need to break free from the assumption that silver consumers today are the same as 10 years ago,” she says. “Those born in the late 1970s are now turning 50. They are active, informed, and affluent.” At the same time, social media is accelerating a cultural reset. Silver influencers are reshaping beauty norms, offering content that feels more relatable — and often more persuasive — than that of younger KOLs. A multi-channel future takes shape For now, Douyin and livestreaming remain dominant, supported by WeChat Channels. But the landscape is evolving. Li expects Xiaohongshu to gain importance as younger, more educated users age into the silver category. “The platform’s user base is already aging up,” she says. “As this cohort enters the silver segment, Xiaohongshu’s more curated, community-driven environment could become a better fit.” Offline channels will also remain relevant, particularly in trust-driven categories. Among these, pharmacy retail stands out as a potential growth engine. “Pharmacies in China have incredible coverage,” Li says. “They’re in every neighborhood, and they carry a sense of authority and trust that few other retail channels can match.” Market still in transition Despite its scale and momentum, China’s silver beauty market remains a work in progress. Product gaps persist, branding is still catching up, and much of the current growth is concentrated in a narrow set of high-conversion channels. But the direction is clear. The opportunity is no longer theoretical. But capturing it will require more than repackaging existing products or chasing short-term traffic. It will require a deeper reset — understanding older consumers not as an afterthought, but as a distinct, evolving, and increasingly influential force shaping the future of beauty in China.
