Why China’s Labor Day travel no longer has a peak season

For most Chinese workers, the 2026 Labor Day holiday runs the standard five days, May 1-5. But nearly 30 cities have introduced spring breaks for primary and secondary school students, stretching the effective holiday to eight to 10 days for families — and up to 17 days for those who stack annual leave on top, beginning April 24. The result is something travel planners rarely see: a Labor Day without a single peak. Demand is spreading across weeks rather than days, fundamentally changing how brands and operators need to think about the season. Beijing is throwing its weight behind the season. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has deployed 284 million RMB ($41.6 million) in consumer vouchers and subsidies, backing roughly 13,700 cultural and tourism activities nationwide — from flower-viewing tours to educational study trips. Corporate partners including Sinopec and China Mobile are amplifying the push with fuel discounts and data deals. Why domestic travel is surging The domestic surge is the headline story. Tongcheng Travel data shows bookings jumped 150%-177% YoY for long-haul inland destinations, Xinjiang, Sichuan, and Yunnan chief among them, as travelers pivot away from international options amid Middle East instability and rising fuel surcharges. Qunar reports multi-city road trip bookings up 118%, with hotel reservations in third-tier cities doubling. Driving much of this is 'reverse tourism' — a social media-fueled movement in which travelers, many of them younger and priced out of overcrowded tier-one hotspots, deliberately seek out smaller, lesser-known towns offering authenticity, affordability, and the quiet thrill of going somewhere most people aren’t. In Hainan’s small county of Ding’an (no beach resorts, no famous landmarks) hotel bookings surged 8.7 times. Searches for niche activities like canyoning, fruit-picking, 'color walks' tracking seasonal blooms have climbed. What is happening to outbound travel from China Visa application volumes in Q1 2026 nearly returned to 2019 levels, with Schengen visas up 20%. Canada, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, and the US remain top long-haul destinations. Retirees now account for over one-third of applicants, favoring cultural trips to Europe and cruises. However, approximately 45% of scheduled flights from mainland China to Japan during the holiday have been canceled — a year-on-year increase of about 33% in cancellation rates. Entire routes from cities like Shenyang, Tianjin, and Ningbo to Osaka and Nagoya have been scrapped. In contrast, flights to South Korea rank first in planned volume, up 11.1% year-on-year. How China’s inbound tourism policy is driving retail spending The inbound picture is gaining momentum too. As of February 2026, China offers visa-free entry to citizens of 50 countries — including the UK, Canada, Australia, and most of Europe — for stays of up to 30 days, with 30 million people entering under the waiver program last year alone. Layered on top, China's State Taxation Administration expanded its instant tax refund program nationwide on April 8, lowering the spending threshold for rebates from 500 RMB ($69) to 200 RMB ($27) and raising the maximum cash rebate to 20,000 RMB ($2,745). The results speak for themselves: within one year of launch, the number of overseas visitors claiming instant refunds surged 12.96-fold, with both eligible sales and total refund amounts up 9.35 times, according to China’s State Administration of Taxation. For brands with physical retail in China, the combination of frictionless entry and instant refunds is quietly creating a new class of high-value international shopper. What China’s new travel patterns mean for brands What does this mean for brands? The flattened travel curve creates a 2–3 week campaign window in place of a single peak — a structural shift that rewards sustained engagement over one-day promotions. Demand is bifurcating: mega-events and marquee properties still command premium spend in major cities, while the real volume growth is in mid-tier destinations. Brands with Japan exposure should plan for continued headwinds; South Korea is the near-term beneficiary. Above all, the traveler has changed — experiences over destinations, serendipity over itineraries, authenticity over scale. As Jia Yunfeng, a UN Tourism expert, said: “The travel window is no longer a single peak but an extended season.”
