Chengdu One Of China's Most Important Emerging Luxury Markets#

As one of China's fastest-growing consumer markets, in recent years Chengdu has attracted the attention of luxury brands from around the world, many of which are heartened by recent evidence that suggests women and younger shoppers in their 20s are the top buyers at high-end malls in the southwestern city. As the Chinese news portal SouFun, writing on Chengdu's luxury market, noted last summer:

The business maxim “the easiest money comes from women and children” is certainly true here in Chengdu. In terms of clothing, each department store has two floors devoted to women’s clothes compared to just one for men. According to a representative at Renhe Spring Department Store (仁和春天百货), sales of women’s clothing still account for most of the store’s revenue.

Given that these lucrative consumer segments -- which tend to be more receptive to fashion trends than their middle-aged-male counterparts -- are alive and well in Chengdu, it's perhaps no surprise that the city is set to be the next host of the Top Marques luxury exhibition, held previously in Beijing, Shanghai, Xiamen, Nanjing, and Shenzhen. Co-organized by Borrison and Yanlord Land, Top Marques Chengdu will take place from January 14-16 at the Yanlord Landmark (仁恒置地广场). Top Marques Chengdu will see many high-end brands make their debut in western China, with 50 companies expected to exhibit more than 400 products, from automobiles and fashion to jewelry and watches.

As Top Marques founder Lei Sheng told Chengdu Business Daily (Chinese), Chengdu was a natural fit for the exhibition. Said Lei, "Chengdu is the center of Sichuan province and the western [Chinese] consumer, and the attitude of Chengdu consumers is really advanced. In terms of spending, lots of stores in Chengdu rank among the top three nationwide in sales of luxury vehicles, watches, fashion and jewelry. We can see proof of this in the numerous brands that are competing to open flagship stores in Chengdu."

Brands expected to take part in Top Marques Chengdu include automakers Ferrari, Maserati, Range Rover, Spyker and Lamborghini, watchmakers like Jaeger-LeCoultre, Piaget, Blancpain and Omega, Japanese pearl specialists Mikimoto, and French fashion brand Dupont.
