Located in southern Paris, the campus is made up of student residences, cultural houses, gardens and public spaces representing different countries. If the Couture Salon stands for couture’s private tradition, the Cité Internationale points to its contemporary outlet: younger, more international and more open. For that reason, Piccioli’s first Balenciaga couture collection leaving the Couture Salon was not simply a change of venue. After reaffirming the house’s couture tradition, it carried that language into a more open contemporary context. This was not about extracting couture from tradition but about allowing it to be seen, understood and desired by a wider audience beyond tradition’s private codes. Her fashion presence does not rely on excessive packaging but on a sense of personal style that feels closer to how contemporary women actually dress and see themselves. The two do not represent the same kind of celebrity image, but together they reflect the plurality of individuals that Piccioli appears to value. Through them, couture enters a broader Asian cultural context through specific, recognizable people. For Balenciaga, the value of such guest choices lies in turning couture from a distant aesthetic authority into a form of personality that contemporary audiences can feel. However perfect fashion may be, it still needs real people to carry it. And real people are never flawless, but it is precisely that imperfection that makes them feel vivid, human and alive. Color sparks emotion, structure gives its force This human-centered approach ultimately served the clothes themselves. Material innovation served the same logic. This season, Balenciaga introduced AMSilk, an advanced bioengineered silk alternative, to couture for the first time. Fossil fuel-free and renewable, the material resembles spider’s silk while offering exceptional tensile strength. At the same time, the house’s Neo-Gazar — a reconsideration of the material invented by Cristóbal Balenciaga — was used both as an outer fabric and an internal structure, creating a new equilibrium between lightness and construction. Some looks in the collection appeared more than once. On their second appearance, color was stripped back to pure black, turning them into silhouettes and directing the eye back to the line, volume and structure of the garments themselves. Feathers emerged as another key motif of the season. Seemingly light and delicate, they also carried a surprising strength, allowing softness itself to become a form of power. Embroidery, too, was no longer merely decorative, but became part of the construction of the silhouette. The sculptural feathered forms created in collaboration with milliner Philip Treacy further blurred the boundary between headwear and clothing, turning feathers into another structure that extended the outline of the body. From three-dimensional digital scanning and internal carapaces to new materials and feather constructions, what Piccioli achieved this season was the transformation of Balenciaga’s couture language from a historical asset into a contemporary expression. He continued Cristóbal Balenciaga’s architectonic DNA — the obsession with clothing as a relationship between body and space — but within that structure, he introduced an emotional immediacy that required no translation. This, perhaps, was the show’s most valuable achievement. At a time when many brands are still trying to manufacture “emotional value” through marketing, Piccioli made the clothes themselves carry feeling. Balenciaga couture was no longer merely a remote aesthetic authority; it became a fashion expression that audiences could feel directly, and from which they could draw pleasure and resonance. Behind this was the chemistry between Piccioli’s long-developed couture methodology and the system of Balenciaga itself. Its significance lay not in whether Balenciaga had begun to look “like” Piccioli, nor in whether Piccioli had surpassed his existing aesthetic vocabulary. Rather, it lay in how he truly fused his understanding of color, the body, atelier collaboration and contemporary technology with Balenciaga’s structure, silhouette and couture tradition. In doing so, he made Balenciaga’s couture world feel warmer, more tangible, and more capable of connecting with contemporary audiences. That connection is precisely one of the hardest values to crack in the technological age. Images can be generated quickly, and buzz can be manufactured almost as quickly. But the time, handwork and genuine feeling behind a couture garment cannot be replaced with a single click. That is where the value of haute couture still lies.
