Paper rich: Why China’s AI fortunes aren’t behaving like wealth

At this year’s World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, held from July 17 to 20, a figure made the rounds: the speed at which several attendees had gone from academic salaries to nine-figure fortunes. The interesting number was not the size of these fortunes but their velocity. Manufacturing wealth in China took a generation to build. Internet wealth took a decade. AI wealth has taken mere quarters. China’s previous generations of new wealth each had a clear spending pattern. The manufacturers of the 1990s and 2000s bought visibility: factories, then villas. The internet rich of the 2010s bought a quieter cosmopolitanism: art and foreign schooling for their children. The most recent generation recycled itself into more property, a loop that broke when the property market did. The AI cohort does not fit this sequence. Their wealth is mostly equity in firms that have not listed and may struggle to, given capital-market frictions facing Chinese tech IPOs abroad. Hurun’s 2026 Global Rich List attributed 114 billionaire fortunes to AI companies, 46 of them newly listed this year, making AI the single largest source of new billionaires worldwide. Within China specifically, ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming reclaimed the position of the country’s richest person with a fortune of RMB 550 billion ($81.5 billion), up 32% year on year, while Moonshot AI founder Yang Zhilin, 33, became China’s second-youngest self-made billionaire entrepreneur with a fortune of RMB 9 billion ($1.3 billion). Wealth, in other words, has outpaced liquidity: these are largely paper fortunes, not bank balances. Rich on paper, not in cash James Early, CEO of Curia Financial and former head of Stansberry China’s US-China investment practice, has heard as much from founders directly. “A lot of AI founders look wealthy on paper, but they don’t actually have cash because the money is all tied up,” he says. Unless a company goes public or a rare private secondary sale gets approved, a funding round’s valuation is real on paper and nowhere else. The caution, in his view, is a question of solvency. “My bet is that AI spending is a lot more conservative than other booms,” he says, “especially in China, because it’s government money and because of fear of a bubble. There’s a big gap between the economics AI is currently delivering and the economics AI is expected to deliver, based on current prices. Every investor, every founder is aware of that.” Early adds that if he were an AI founder himself, he would be reluctant to start living visibly well. “There could be a bubble. This could all blow up.” Visibility is even less comfortable for this new cohort. A meaningful share of this year’s new Chinese billionaires made their money in semiconductors: 18 new billionaire entrepreneurs in the sector, including MetaX’s Chen Weiliang at RMB 33 billion ($4.8 billion) and Moore Threads’ Zhang Jianzhong at RMB 32 billion ($4.7 billion). This category of wealth is tied directly to state industrial policy in a way consumer-internet money never was. Money that originates in a national strategic project is harder to spend conspicuously than money coming from an app. Property is still the wealth signal Geography is doing more explanatory work than culture. In South Korea, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are paying staff bonuses of hundreds of thousands of dollars per person on the back of the AI-driven chip boom, with average wealth per adult up 44% since 2020. A share of that cash is reportedly being redirected into American assets, a form of spending closer to hedging than consumption. Chinese AI wealth, by contrast, is flowing into property in specific cities. In Hangzhou, home of the “Six Little Dragons” — a cluster of tech startups including Game Science, DeepSeek, Unitree Robotics, Deep Robotics, BrainCo, and Manycore Tech — all 66 units in the first phase of the high-end Wangtianji development sold out on their July 16 launch day, generating RMB 3.36 billion ($498 million) in sales. The top unit, a 624-square-meter penthouse, fetched RMB 152 million ($22.5 million). Luxury home transactions above RMB 20 million ($2.9 million) in Hangzhou hit a 10-year high in the first half of 2026, with 480 units sold. That is not nostalgia so much as legibility: property remains the one asset class a founder’s parents can still recognize as wealth. AI wealth finds a quieter expression The same dynamic is showing up in art, too. In Hangzhou, DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng and Game Science CEO Feng Ji are among the entrepreneurs whose private wealth now sustains a growing scene of unmarked, referral-only art spaces, built through studio visits and WeChat introductions rather than auctions or gallery openings. “Hangzhou continues to produce new wealth, and many of the people creating it are young,” collector Wu Yunkai told Observer in August. It is a form of quiet, selective participation that may increasingly define how AI wealth is expressed. There is a visual marker of the shift as well, and it is not on the founders themselves. Steve Jobs’ black turtleneck belonged to a specifically American convention, in which a founder’s body could stand in for a company’s design philosophy. That convention has not transferred to China; personal branding through dress remains rare among its AI founders. What has changed is corporate, not personal: product launches such as Kimi 3’s have grown visibly warmer and more human in their visual language as the underlying technology has grown more capable. The humanizing has happened to the brand rather than the person, arguably a more honest register for wealth that would rather not be looked at directly. Luxury’s shift from visibility to privacy Luxury brands built their China playbook on the assumption that new high-net-worth individuals want to be taught what luxury means and will pay to be taught quickly. That worked when the wealth was liquid and the people holding it wanted visibility. Neither condition holds for the AI cohort: their fortunes are largely equity-locked, and the caution that surrounds state-adjacent wealth makes overt display a liability rather than a signal. Brands still running the gala-and-flagship-launch model aimed at this group are, in effect, marketing to a customer who structurally cannot behave the way the marketing assumes. The more interesting opportunity sits in what this wealth is already buying rather than what it should be persuaded to buy. If the money is moving into property and privacy rather than objects, the brand’s role shifts from a seller of visible goods to a quiet participant in an invisible purchase. This could look like codeveloping interiors and furnishings for luxury properties, offering bespoke or unbranded service tiers, and attaching to real estate and family-office relationships rather than to a single transactional sale. There is also a shift worth noting in where the human connection sits. Earlier waves of luxury marketing in China relied on founder mythology, the idea that a person’s taste could be licensed to a brand. This generation of AI founders is largely uninterested in playing that role personally, even as their companies invest heavily in a warmer, more humanized public visual identity. That suggests the more durable partnership is with the company as a brand entity, not with the individual as a face: co-branding, sponsorship, and cultural association built around the corporate identity a founder is willing to project. Finally, the category mix this money favors may narrow before it widens. If capital is concentrating in property first, the categories that ride along with real estate — art acquired for a home, high-end furniture, private collecting, and bespoke interior commissions — are likely to see this wealth before watches, jewelry, or ready-to-wear do. Brands positioned adjacent to the property transaction itself, rather than waiting for a separate luxury-shopping occasion, are better positioned to catch this wave early.
