Mystique can be built: What a new luxury house just proved

A private collector recently financed, out of his own pocket, an entire exhibition dedicated to watches from a designer who left the industry more than a decade ago. Thousands of people attended. No brand organized it, no marketing budget touched it, and no agency seeded it. It was driven by pure devotion for pieces the market once dismissed as audacious. Sit with that for a moment because it raises the most uncomfortable question in luxury: When was the last time anything designed by a committee inspired devotion like that? The designer is Michael Wunderman, and I recently spent two hours with him in Palma de Mallorca for a Future of Luxury Podcast episode, days after he launched House of Wunder, his own fine watches and jewelry house. The conversation crystallized something I have argued for years: luxury exists to create extreme value far beyond function, and story is what creates it. Mystique has become the scarcest asset in the industry. Manufacturing tolerances are tighter than ever, finishing is immaculate, and quality has never been higher across the board. And this is precisely the problem. When excellence becomes universal, excellence becomes invisible. Clients can no longer distinguish brands through quality because quality stopped being scarce. What remains scarce is the feeling that a piece was willed into existence by one human being who staked everything on it, wrapped in a story that gives the object meaning beyond its materials. The story creates mystique What makes Wunderman remarkable is that he understood this from the very first day. Before a single piece reached the market, he asked me to help him build the story and brand strategy that would bring his creative vision to life. He knew that extraordinary design without narrative remains merely a product. Most founders treat story as decoration applied after the fact. He treated it as architecture. The result is Refine Your Wild, a philosophy in which watches and jewelry become an inspiration to live life with full intensity and ultimate refinement at once. The pieces carry a sensuality rarely found in the category. His signature construction uses 17 micro links, whereas convention uses three, so that metal drapes like fabric, and a new piece wraps the wrist as if it had been worn for 20 years. Veteran collectors who have handled thousands of watches tell him his bracelet is the finest thing they have ever touched. Not seen. Touched. An industry obsessed with what can be photographed is being quietly overtaken by what can only be felt. The philosophy runs deeper still. In our conversation, Wunderman shared a word he coined: “forgemories,” the cherished, half-forgotten memories that resurface in a flash and reveal themselves as the fabric of who we are. His pieces are designed to become keepers of them. Worn every day, gathering the marks of a life fully lived, a watch becomes a talisman that gives the wearer permission to be more of themselves. This is a profound theory of value: the piece grows more meaningful with every scratch, every journey, every moment it witnesses. And the next generation of clients, who buy meaning, memory, and identity, respond to it instinctively. The human behind the house None of this emerged from nowhere. Wunderman is the son of watchmaking legend Severin Wunderman, the man who made Gucci the top-selling watch brand in the world by volume and then resurrected Corum. Michael became marketing director of Gucci watches at 19 and later president of Corum, where the pieces he designed ignited the large-watch era and became the collectibles that a devoted community now exhibits. He then walked away entirely, produced films, designed multi-million-dollar homes, and returned years later to create something extraordinary. That biography cannot be manufactured, and it illustrates the point: the houses with mystique are the ones where the story and the creator are inseparable. The market is responding. Two weeks after launch, House of Wunder is generating substantial hype, demand, and industry buzz, built on strictly limited editions, deliberately scarce distribution, and a digital concierge studio serving clients worldwide by appointment. A young house holding that discipline while demand builds would have seemed reckless a decade ago. It now looks like the strongest model in the category, because scarcity held with conviction compounds into desirability, and desirability, once earned, is the only moat luxury has. The devotion test The lessons for brand leaders reach well beyond watches. Extreme value is created through story, and story requires a human being at its center whom clients can believe in. Sensuality beats specification: the heart decides before the mind rationalizes. And mystique is a choice, built through conviction, scarcity, and narrative discipline, available to any house willing to abandon consensus. The devotion test makes it concrete.
