Lululemon has been one of the few Western brands to sustain strong momentum in the country since the Covid-19 pandemic, making any reputational hit particularly risky. That vulnerability is amplified by the company’s reliance on China as a growth engine. While North America has slowed, Lululemon posted about 30% sales expansion in the country in the fiscal year ended in February. Lululemon China pushed back on safety concerns Wednesday, saying in a statement that “all Lululemon products currently on sale in mainland China are PFAS free and comply with applicable laws, regulations and national and industrial standards.” Lululemon earlier said it was cooperating with the Texas attorney general’s inquiry and providing documents, adding that the company phased out the use of PFAS in fiscal 2023. The intensity of the online debate reflects Lululemon’s prominence in the world’s second-largest economy. Riding a post-Covid surge in interest in outdoor sports and fitness, the brand has outperformed much of China’s sportswear sector over the past two years. It has maintained double-digit online sales growth for most months since early 2024, outpacing rivals including Nike, Adidas and domestic giant Anta Sports4, according to data provider Shang Zhi Zhen. From safety fears to discount hopes Not all Chinese consumers are alarmed. Some social media users argued the chemicals in question are common in many products and not worth an overreaction. “I’m still alive and kicking after all those food additives,” one Xiaohongshu user wrote. “Why would I be scared of a piece of clothing worn outside?” Others speculated about geopolitical or competitive motives behind the investigation, pointing to tensions with the US and Canada or suggesting rivals could benefit. Still, concerns persist among some shoppers about whether past purchases may have contained PFAS. “Don’t have filters for bands, they are all the same,” wrote one person on microblogging site Weibo. Of Lululemon’s premium yogawear, another added: “Thank God I can’t afford them. Poverty protects me.”
