On Friday, October 31, Jing Daily inaugurated its Luxury & Culture Breakfast with an exclusive gathering at The Peninsula London, held in celebration of David Hockney’s 1995 BMW Art Car, currently on display in the hotel lobby, thanks to our friends at Cart Dept. Set against the vivid backdrop of Hockney’s pop-inspired automotive masterpiece, a guest list of fashion and art investors, creatives, and agency minds gathered for a thoughtful discussion on the future of luxury brand strategy in 2025 and the enduring value of creative independence. Jing Daily welcomed guests from Barclays, Alibaba, Karla Otto, Brunswick Group, Harrods, Woo Hon Fai Group, and Together Group. On collaboration and unconventional creativity The discussion, moderated by Jing Daily brand editor Sadie Bargeron, brought together two creative minds bridging tradition and contemporary design: Sean Dixon, co-founder and managing director of British menswear label Richard James, and Oscar Ouyang, a 26-year-old, Beijing-born knitwear designer redefining the boundaries of gender-fluid fashion. Dixon reflected on achieving brick-and-mortar retail longevity, the strength of Richard James’ US consumer, and launching brand collaborations in unknown territories. As a Savile Row disruptor who built suits for “people who weren’t suit people,” he spoke of the enduring value of craft and collaboration in an era of change. Under his direction, Richard James has become known for bringing wit and modernity to traditional tailoring, with cultural moments that span Elton John’s iconic polka-dot suits, wedding looks for the Gallagher brothers, and high-profile partnerships with brands like BMW and, more recently, emerging London designer Luke Derrick. Each collaboration, Dixon remarked, has been an exercise in exploring craftsmanship through new creative lenses. London as an emerging fashion hub Ouyang, meanwhile, offered a distinctly global perspective. Having launched his eponymous, artistically avant-garde knitwear brand shortly after graduating from Central Saint Martins, he noted that “London remains the best city for emerging designers” as a place still synonymous with experimentation and risk-taking. He highlighted Japan and South Korea as his most adventurous markets. As the kickoff event in Jing Daily’s new series, we underscored a shared ethos between Hockney’s playful BMW, Dixon’s tailored rebellion, and Ouyang’s daring knitwear: creativity that challenges convention while honoring craft.
