When Rhode launched Spotwear in April, the product looked less like a skincare treatment than a festival accessory. Designed with Justin Bieber and shaped like mushrooms, daisies, jelly beans, and bubbles, the hydrocolloid acne patches arrived as beauty brands increasingly experiment with products intended to be displayed rather than concealed. Rhode is not the first company to turn blemish treatment into a visible accessory. That distinction belongs to Starface, whose yellow Hydro-Stars helped transform acne patches from a discreet skincare tool into a category with mainstream appeal. According to public reports, the brand has sold more than 1 billion patches globally, recently secured roughly $105 million in minority investment funding, and is expected to generate around $150 million in revenue this year. The success has encouraged a broader group of beauty and wellness brands to experiment with products that blur the boundaries between treatment and self-expression. Decorative acne patches, logo-shaped eye masks, wearable aromatherapy stickers, and jewelry-inspired wellness patches are moving products once associated with bathroom cabinets into social media feeds, music festivals, and everyday wardrobes. Beauty companies are searching for new ways to stand out in categories where efficacy claims have become harder to differentiate, while younger consumers increasingly expect products to deliver emotional and social value alongside performance. Acne patches become fashion objects Acne patches were originally designed to be concealed. Hydrocolloid dressings absorbed fluid from blemishes, protected the skin from picking, and allowed users to treat breakouts without drawing attention to them. Early products emphasized transparency, thinness, and invisibility. The newer generation of patches has inverted that logic. Stars, hearts, flowers, mushrooms, and clover-shaped stickers do not attempt to hide breakouts. They turn them into a visible part of the look. “It is undeniable that this wave was initially ignited by social media,” says Zoey Zhong, cultural and marketing consultant at Cherry Blossoms Intercultural Branding. “However, looking at the underlying lasting trend, beauty products are significantly amplifying their role in self-expression.” Zhong compares the rise of decorative patches to the way lipsticks and fragrances have moved outside handbags and become accessories in their own right. A perfume clipped to a bag or a lipstick worn as a charm still carries the same functional value, but visibility adds another layer of meaning. The product starts to communicate taste, personality, and cultural fluency before it is even used. A visible acne patch signals more than a skin concern. It can show that the wearer is comfortable with imperfection, aware of internet beauty codes, or aligned with a particular celebrity, fandom, or visual language. Gen Z turns skincare into a fashion statement The appeal is strongest among younger consumers, for whom beauty has become less about correction and more about presentation. Ming Yii Lai, senior strategy consultant at Daxue Consulting, says the trend should be understood in two layers. “Both a trend cycle and a category evolution are happening, but in different layers,” Lai says. “The format is trend-driven, where cute patches, decorative treatments, and viral wearability are highly social-media-native. The underlying behavior is more structural, where young consumers shift from concealment to comfortably turning skin management into a form of self-expression.” In China, that shift has taken on specific cultural nuances. Zhong says visible beauty patches in the US often function as individual social currency, allowing young consumers to signal that they are “in the know” and aligned with the latest influencer-led subcultures. In China, the behavior often leans more toward collectivism and fandom identity. K-pop and C-pop fan culture has helped push patches into music festivals and concerts, where some consumers wear customized designs featuring favorite idols. Influenced by photocard-decorating culture, known as “Goo Card” (咕卡), Gen Z consumers have even started referring to face-decorating with patches as “Goo-ing the face” (咕脸). “Even those without acne may wear patches featuring their favourite idols, not for treatment, but to visibly declare that they belong to the same fandom,” Zhong says Wearable beauty moves beyond acne Acne patches have achieved the biggest breakthrough because the category is highly visible, easy to share, and already familiar to consumers. China’s acne-care market also remains large enough to support further experimentation. Online acne-care sales reached 14.3 billion RMB ($2.1 billion) in the 12 months ending April 2026, up 12.24% year-on-year. Demand is especially pronounced among younger consumers, with Shenzhen Chronic Disease Prevention Center data showing student acne consultations rose about 50 percent during the 2025 summer peak period. Peking University People’s Hospital also found summer acne visits were roughly 30 percent higher than in other seasons. The shift, however, is no longer confined to acne care. “At WGSN, we first highlighted beauty and wellness patches as an emerging opportunity back in 2023, driven by growing interest in accessible self-care, acne positivity and products that fit more seamlessly into everyday life,” says Sienna Piccioni, director of beauty at WGSN. “What we’re seeing now is those behaviours move further into the mainstream.” Piccioni argues that products once designed to remain invisible are increasingly being worn openly, reflecting changing attitudes toward self-expression, authenticity, and wellbeing. As a result, wearable beauty is beginning to spread across categories including eye care, masks, fragrance, sun protection, and wellness. Consumers are drawn to products that combine efficacy and convenience while also creating moments of enjoyment, ritual, or self-expression. Moqian Sun, founder of marketing and consulting firm The Harvest, sees acne care and face masks as the categories with the clearest near-term potential because consumers already understand how they fit into daily routines. “Acne care and face masks have already gone through full market education, with extremely high user acceptance and a solid foundation for repeat purchase,” Sun says. “Their expansion potential is clear and tangible.” Sun protection could become another area of innovation. Traditional sunscreen has long been dominated by topical formats, but Sun sees room for transparent sunscreen patches, localized facial UV patches, and decorative sun-protection stickers that combine physical protection with visual design. Lai points to fragrance and emergency skincare as other potential categories. Festival rescue kits, date-night emergency patches, and wearable aromatherapy products designed as jewelry, clothing pins, or phone accessories could create new consumption scenarios built around public use rather than private application. Health and wellness may also benefit. Zhong cites South Korean brand Ear Coco, whose decorative ear patches are inspired by acupressure and designed to resemble stylish piercings. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has long used acupoint patches, but the format rarely crossed into fashion because it lacked visual appeal. Ear Coco’s popularity shows how a functional wellness product can be repositioned through design, though Zhong notes that the brand has also faced criticism over whether it appropriates therapeutic principles rooted in TCM. Patch aesthetics should not compromise efficacy Products that are meant to be seen encourage user-generated content, reduce reliance on paid media, and create opportunities for collaborations with fashion, entertainment, outdoor, beverage, and lifestyle brands. Sun says visual design can give smaller players an immediate point of difference in a commoditized skincare market. Distinctive styles can help brands break through without competing only on ingredients, clinical claims, or media spending. But the model also has limits. Aesthetic-first products are easy to imitate, and visual trends move quickly. Unsold designs can become dead stock, while continuous style updates raise development and inventory costs. “High-quality, visually expressive beauty products can sustain a stable premium,” Sun says. “In contrast, products driven purely by visual gimmicks are bound to be short-lived and difficult to sustain in the long run.” Zhong makes a similar point. Consumers may pay more for visible beauty products that successfully combine aesthetics with basic functional value, but they remain alert to overpricing. “This is especially true for luxury beauty brands attempting similar moves,” Zhong says. “If the pricing is set too far above ordinary products, consumers will dismiss it as a gimmicky cash grab.” The warning is particularly relevant in China, where beauty consumers are highly ingredient-conscious. Lai says premium pricing only works when brands can prove both performance and aesthetic value. “If a premium brand cannot prove clinical efficacy alongside the aesthetic appeal, the product will not be sustainable in the market,” Lai says. Consumer feedback already shows that design alone is not enough. One acne-patch market study found that 42 percent of users considered products ineffective, while 49 percent of negative feedback focused on odor, quantity, and adhesion problems such as patches falling off or failing to fit properly. At the same time, convenience and “invisible coverage” remained core advantages, with 78 percent positive feedback around those functions. That tension explains why wearable beauty is unlikely to replace efficacy as the industry’s main selling point. It adds another layer to the purchase decision. A patch can be cute, collectible, or culturally coded, but it still needs to stay on the face and help manage the blemish. Gimmick risk The strongest opportunity for brands may lie less in individual products than in repeatable rituals. Lai says wearable beauty can turn skincare into a sharable consumer behavior, lowering customer-acquisition costs and encouraging organic circulation across social platforms. A consumer wearing a patch at a festival, posting an eye mask during travel, or styling a fragrance pin on a bag gives the product visibility that traditional skincare rarely achieves. That visibility can also create new collaboration models. Acne patches can be tied to concerts, fashion drops, summer campaigns, or outdoor events. Sunscreen patches could align with sportswear and travel. Wearable aromatherapy products could sit between fragrance, wellness, and accessories. Still, the risk is that brands lean too heavily into design and lose credibility as skincare players. Sun warns that a product positioned too closely to toys may struggle to move into higher-performance or premium skincare territory later. Piccioni believes the key challenge for brands is not attracting attention but maintaining relevance once the novelty fades. “Visible beauty products can command a premium when they deliver genuine value alongside a distinctive experience,” she says. “Aesthetic appeal might drive discovery, but performance remains the foundation of long-term trust.” That distinction may determine which wearable beauty products evolve into lasting categories. Decorative patches, fragrance accessories, and wellness stickers can generate visibility, create new rituals, and encourage sharing, but consumers still expect them to perform.
