When Justin Bieber headlined Coachella 2026, it wasn’t his setlist that dominated Vietnamese social media — it was his shorts. The barrel-leg denim Puffa Shorts he wore on stage, designed by Hung La for his London-based label LỰU ĐẠN, sold out within hours and sent searches for the brand surging overnight. It was a single, high-visibility moment, but it arrived against a broader backdrop: a quiet, sustained push by Vietnam-based labels — among them Fancì Club, Lsoul, and La Lune — onto the mood boards of celebrity stylists worldwide. These are the kinds of placements — major artists, global red carpets — that established houses from Paris to Seoul actively compete for. That Vietnamese labels are winning them points to something more durable than a trend cycle: a creative infrastructure built on distinct cultural identity rather than imitation, and one the global fashion industry is increasingly unable to ignore. Made in Vietnam, designed in Vietnam For decades, “Made in Vietnam” carried a specific meaning in the global fashion supply chain: volume manufacturing for Western brands at competitive cost. That perception is shifting — driven by a new generation of designers who are using the same label to signal original craft, cultural authorship, and quality on their own terms. Lụa, founder of Mode Lụa, a curation platform spotlighting Vietnamese independent fashion, says social media has done more than amplify local brands — it has raised the standard they are held to. “Vietnam was never a fast fashion hub, but for decades it made clothes for H&M, Zara, and Nike. So ‘Made in Vietnam’ was basically everywhere, just under someone else’s name," she said. Now designers are claiming that label for themselves. “A new wave of Vietnamese designers changed the game by building brands with real identity and stories rooted in local culture and craft. At the same time, local consumers began taking pride in supporting homegrown labels. Social media played a huge role too, giving these designers a direct line to the world and finally showcasing what Vietnamese creativity actually looks like.” The commercial mechanics are straightforward: influencers post, audiences shop. From artisanal dresses surfaced on Pinterest to custom footwear, Vietnamese labels have built reliable discovery pipelines through organic social content. Competitive pricing and fast production turnarounds — custom pieces delivered within days — add a practical case that complements the aesthetic one. For international consumers, social media has effectively removed the geographic barrier. Brands that would previously have been invisible outside Ho Chi Minh City now reach global audiences directly, with Gen Z proving the most receptive market. “Craftsmanship, price, speed, social media buzz, and local pride all matter and work. The creativity and quality have always lived here. Vietnam holds incredible craftsmanship, a rich textile heritage, and a fierce new generation of designers who are boldly, unmistakably Vietnamese,” Lụa added. Physical store interest Jennie Mai, the co-founder of Do With Dash, a curated platform for Vietnamese labels, confirmed that tourists now flock to Vietnamese brand stores in Ho Chi Minh City even as social media turns #VietnamShoppingHaul into a trending keyword. “Many of our brand partners at Do With Dash already draw strong international interest, especially through their Ho Chi Minh City stores, where overseas customers and tourists actively shop and discover Vietnamese fashion,” Mai said, adding that sustaining that momentum will require consistent creativity, product quality, and clear brand identity — the foundations, she argues, for Vietnam to earn a longer-term place alongside Paris, Milan, and Seoul. Mai also noted that a Do With Dash pop-up in Singapore drew strong interest from consumers who were largely unfamiliar with Vietnamese fashion — a response she says demonstrates that partner brands are ready for broader international exposure, not just within the region’s existing diaspora audiences. The appetite for physical retail is part of a broader shift. As online shopping fatigue sets in — particularly among Gen Z — pop-ups and permanent stores are gaining ground as experience-driven alternatives, offering the kind of immersive, shareable environments that digital storefronts cannot replicate. The data supports the direction of travel. According to the Bain-Altagamma Luxury Study, the global personal luxury goods market contracted 2% in 2024, while experiential luxury grew 5% — a divergence that helps explain the renewed commercial logic behind pop-ups and immersive retail. KPMG’s “Luxury in the Midst of Change” report reinforces this, finding that Gen Z consumers increasingly expect brands to reflect their identity and cultural values rather than heritage prestige alone. Meanwhile, Bluebell Group’s 2025 Asia Lifestyle Consumer Profile found strong and growing interest in Asian luxury brands among regional consumers, led by mainland China (86%), Southeast Asia (83%), and Hong Kong (70%). Quang Minh Le, co-founder of Mozaic Space, a multi-brand creative retail venue in Ho Chi Minh City, sees physical presence as essential to building lasting customer relationships. “The offline experience defines the moment. Social media can launch a brand overnight, but real emotional connection demands face-to-face contact,” he said. “TikTok and Instagram capture a short moment, but a physical space lets people feel the product, the music, the energy, the full atmosphere of a brand. In fashion and lifestyle, people buy the feeling and the experience, not just the product.” Vietnam on its own terms Le also pointed to a broader shift in how Asian fashion defines itself — less by Western benchmarks, more by its own cultural references. Tokyo and Seoul, though both globally influential, represent distinct creative traditions rather than a single Asian template, a distinction he argues the industry too often flattens. “We did not just build a store — we built a space where multiple local brands, each with a different identity, can share the same roof without clashing or competing, benefiting from each other’s customer base while keeping their own distinct aesthetic and creative direction, all under the same spirit of Saigon. In many ways, it is a snapshot of Vietnam’s youth culture today,” Le said. Vietnam’s manufacturing reputation — built over decades supplying Zara, Nike, and others — has long defined how the country is perceived in the global fashion industry. That framing is being complicated by a generational shift: Gen Z consumers are increasingly gravitating toward independent labels that prioritize smaller production runs, higher-quality materials, and cultural authenticity over the volume-driven model those same corporations represent. “International visitors come for what a polished global mall cannot offer. The space feels handmade, imperfect, and local — raw textures, unscripted music, and zero interest in copying Tokyo or Seoul,” he added. Le attributes part of the momentum behind Vietnamese fashion to a broader regional dynamic — Chinese clothing trends have helped spotlight other Asian cultures, while K-pop and Asian celebrity culture have expanded the audience further. But he is careful to draw distinctions: each national fashion scene, he argues, is rooted in its own culture, aesthetic, and history, and those differences should be recognized rather than collapsed into a single “Asian” narrative. “Vietnamese fashion carries a different energy. It is not as polished as South Korea or as avant-garde as Japan. In Saigon, the scene feels raw, free, and tied to everyday life — shaped by street culture, music, and the rhythm of the city,” he said. The country’s reputation as a low-cost manufacturer has not disappeared overnight. But its young designers are not waiting for global validation to arrive before moving forward — and neither is the domestic community backing them. Local support, in this context, is not a consolation prize. It is the foundation the movement is built on. “Vietnamese fashion is still finding its footing in the global industry’s centers of influence — Paris, Milan, Seoul — and the world has only seen a handful of labels and moments so far. That will change over the next few years, as more local brands appear across global platforms and creative spaces,” Le said.
