From classic icon to responsible storyteller, Chaumet is making significant investments in CSR

In Shanghai this May, a particular kind of “bee crowd” followed the golden light into Chaumet’s Bee de Chaumet pop-up experience space. They paused and took photographs among honeycomb shadows and golden light, following the exhibition’s narrative to trace how the bee flew from a Napoleonic imperial emblem into Chaumet’s more than two-century-old naturalist vocabulary. In the vitrines, jewels glowed against gilded installations, as if bees, honeycomb cells and the order of nature had been rewoven into a contemporary language of high jewelry. The space was, in essence, an aesthetic narrative built around the Bee de Chaumet collection: honeycomb light, golden structures and jewel displays came together to frame the maison’s contemporary reading of bees and honeycomb cells — symbols of history, nature and vitality, newly staged for modern Shanghai. From brand symbol to strategic pivot But as visitors moved into the section devoted to sustainability, the bee began to carry more than visual charm. The space presented Chaumet’s 2025 Bee de Chaumet gold and diamond pendant, whose every gold component is made from 100 percent traceable gold — with a clear route from mine to finished jewel. Also on view was a new Bee de Chaumet high jewelry creation in white gold, made to the same 100 percent traceable gold standard. First unveiled in France in late April, the piece made its public debut in China at the Shanghai space. In this setting, Bee de Chaumet was not simply presented as a classic collection. It carried another narrative: when a jewel’s gold can be traced, its brilliance is no longer only about design, craftsmanship and heritage. It also becomes a statement about responsible sourcing and supply-chain transparency. That may be what high jewelry asks us to reconsider now: beauty can move us, but it can also reassure us. Chaumet’s relationship with the bee stretches back more than two centuries. Founded in Paris in 1780, Chaumet placed nature at the center of its identity from the beginning. Then came Napoleon, who saw the bee as a symbol of power and industry, and appointed Chaumet to create imperial jewelry. The bee entered the maison’s visual language. By the 19th century, Chaumet was reinterpreting the motif through geometric honeycomb-cell forms, moving it from figuration toward abstraction. Now, in Shanghai, the collection seemed to become a key — one that made high jewelry’s conversation about “the source of beauty” feel tangible. Where does the gold come from? Can raw materials come from nature without depleting it? Can mining be ordered, monitored and traced? And can every link in the chain, from miner to maison to wearer, form a more positive connection with the beauty it produces? Such questions have rarely sat at the center of high jewelry’s narrative. Partly because raw-material supply chains feel far removed from the consumer. Partly because jewelry carries a dreamlike aura that invites people to admire its light, not question its path. Yet the public has not been blind to the complications behind that chain. The 2006 film Blood Diamond, set against the Sierra Leone civil war, brought the issue of conflict diamonds into mainstream view. In the film, a diamond is no longer only a symbol of love, commitment and eternity. It may also be tied to armed conflict, child labor, violence and resource extraction. As these questions have become more visible, high jewelry’s focus on sustainability and traceability is no longer only an expression of values. It is also a response to consumer trust. It points to a more fundamental question: when someone buys a jewel that symbolizes love and eternity, can they also be sure that its brilliance has a clear, transparent and responsible origin? Chaumet’s choice was to put that question into the product itself. Rather than leaving sustainability in corporate reports or conceptual projects, the maison placed the commitment inside Bee de Chaumet — a recognizable house classic that consumers can see, remember and wear. Bee de Chaumet is not a collection built merely on a literal bee motif. More precisely, it translates the bee and the hexagonal structure of honeycomb cells into an expandable jewelry language. It carries Chaumet’s historical link to the Napoleonic bee emblem while extending the maison’s naturalist tradition. At the same time, the geometry of the honeycomb cells turns nature into something more modern, structured and architectural. Beyond brilliance, toward transparency Across its broader practice, Chaumet’s sustainability work does not stop at a single product. It extends across responsible sourcing, environmental management and nature conservation. As a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, Chaumet complies with the Kimberley Process, the international certification system designed to keep conflict diamonds out of the supply chain. The maison also applies stricter sourcing standards to reduce the risk of diamonds and precious metals being linked to conflict, illegal trade or high-risk sources. In 2024, Chaumet joined the Swiss Better Gold Association, extending that responsibility to the source of gold mining by supporting artisanal and small-scale mines as they improve production standards and move toward more regulated, safer and more environmentally responsible practices. Beyond regulating the origins of its raw materials, responsibility points to a larger question for a maison rooted in the idea of the “naturalist jeweler”: when a brand has long drawn inspiration from nature, how does it give back by protecting nature itself? In 2025, Chaumet signed its first three-year partnership with WWF France, bringing nature conservation and biodiversity protection into the maison’s long-term actions. After supporting related conservation projects in France and Japan, Chaumet is now extending that commitment to China. In 2026, Chaumet announced a collaboration with WWF in China, centered on the Taihang-Yanshan Mountain region in northern China. Together, they will support a biodiversity-oriented forest management and restoration project designed to help local forests develop richer, healthier ecosystems. The project is scheduled to run from 2026 to 2028. Through an initial 200-hectare forest restoration pilot, it aims to explore a model of sustainable forest management that can be applied on a wider scale, contributing to the improvement of more than 200,000 hectares of surrounding forest landscapes. Its significance is not simply to make forests greener, but to make ecosystems healthier and more resilient, while allowing nearby communities to benefit over the long term from a better natural environment. These initiatives give Chaumet’s long-standing nature conservation practice a more specific setting in China. Nature has long appeared in the maison’s creations as bees, honeycomb cells, flowers and birds; it has also been an object of continued protection. This time, the forest management and restoration project in the Taihang-Yanshan region brings that commitment into a local ecological setting. Seen through the Shanghai pop-up, the role of Bee de Chaumet becomes clearer. It translates Chaumet’s two sustainability threads — nature conservation and responsible sourcing — into a product narrative that consumers can grasp through a single jewel. On the one hand, it extends the maison’s naturalist imagination around bees, honeycomb cells and vitality. On the other, 100 percent traceable gold gives that natural beauty a clearer path of origin. According to the maison, Chaumet also plans to use the Bee de Chaumet collection as a starting point to gradually extend 100 percent traceable gold to more jewelry and high jewelry creations. This means sustainability is not remaining a product label attached to one collection; it is entering the maison’s broader jewelry system. For a maison with more than two and a half centuries of history, this is not a light gesture. It is a clear signal that the meaning of “excellence” in high jewelry is shifting. In the past, excellence meant rare stones, complex craftsmanship, brand history and aesthetic tradition. Now it must also include one more measure: whether a jewel has a transparent, responsible origin that can withstand scrutiny.
