French, Chinese Artistic Treasures Arrive At French Pavilion

Paintings By Cezanne, Bonnard And Manet Join Chinese Artists Like Yan Pei-Ming And Chen Zhen With the grand opening of the World Expo just a few days away, treasured cultural and historical objects from around the world have arrived in Shanghai as pavilions add their finishing touches. This week at the French pavilion -- which is being promoted as "The Sensual City" -- artwork by Chinese and French artists went on display. France, keen to promote its cultural history as well as its more modern association with luxury and luxury goods in the China market, hopes its participation in the Shanghai World Expo will further burnish the country's image -- which plummeted in the run-up to the Beijing Olympics nearly two years ago. From Xinhua: With various French art styles -- from modern art to classic works like Vincent Van Gogh, the French pavilion offers a creative feast for international and Chinese art enthusiasts alike. Alexandre, a worker in the French Pavilion, said: "Exhibits in the Pavilion include paintings by masters Paul Cezanne, Pierre Bonnard, Vincent Van Gogh, Jean- Francois Millet, Edouard Manet, Paul Gauguin." He added the masterpieces including The Dance Hall in Arles by Van Gogh, The Balcony by Edouard, Woman with Coffee Pot by Cezanne, which are rare to see for ordinary art lovers. The French Pavilion also presents a wide range of works by Chinese contemporary artists Zao Wou-Ki and Yan Pei-Ming and Chen Zhen, whose works build a bridge between French and Chinese cultures. The three artists have worked a long time in France where they have been greatly inspired by the culture. The pavilion, dubbed "the Sensual City", will showcase not only artwork but the sights, smells, and sounds of France, said Alexandre. As Jing Daily pointed out recently, French luxury powerhouse LVMH Moet Hennissey is one of the partners of the French pavilion, and with the sights and sounds (and scents) visitors can expect to experience at "The Sensual City," we can expect this pavilion to be one of the most popular at the six-month-long event.
