Collaborations aren’t losing their power; uninspired ones are. As more brands settle for combining logos and pooling traffic, a deliberately absurd “wedding” between two sticker characters has offered a reminder of what an IP partnership can still deliver. On July 3, the national debut exhibition and first pop-up store from the collaboration between Chinese sticker IP Siam Lip (LiPU) and Japanese sticker character My Friend Rabbit opened at Jingfeng Center in Nanjing, running through August 2. The centerpiece of the mall’s 10th anniversary celebrations, the campaign cast Siam Lip’s Rabbit Xiuzhen as groom and My Friend Rabbit as bride in a lavish offline ceremony under the theme “The Ridiculous Wedding Scene,” built around a 400-sqm outdoor wedding set, a 200-square-meter pop-up store and a storyline centered on the union. The payoff was measurable. Of the roughly 200 limited-edition products released, more than 100 were nationwide debuts, and several sold out as soon as they went on sale, Xinhua reported. Some buyers turned to resale platforms in search of preferred designs. For a partnership between two chat-window stickers, that is an unusual degree of offline conversion. Launched in September 2022, Siam Lip features black-faced cat LiPU, dog Beagle Duodong, pelican Xiaohe, pink Rabbit Xiuzhen and world-weary carrot Zhang Tianzhong — a cast fans have nicknamed the “Four Meats and One Vegetable” family. Siam Lip stickers have generated more than 130 million sends and more than 3.7 million downloads on WeChat’s sticker marketplace, per official platform data. Rabbit Xiuzhen’s appeal lies in contrast: a soft, conventionally cute exterior over a calculating, strong-willed character — a tension that speaks to young consumers’ taste for emotional release and self-deprecating humor. My Friend Rabbit, the bride, originated on the Japanese messaging platform Line, where illustrator Himari launched it as a paid sticker series on the Line Creators Market in 2018. The character recorded 1.5 million downloads in a single month and has surpassed 30 million sends, according to the organizers. Its exaggerated, cheeky expressions capture states familiar to younger audiences — overwhelmed one moment, checked out the next, but able to laugh at themselves. What unites them is a rejection of polish. Neither presents as an impeccably adorable mascot; both build emotional connection through imperfection, unpredictability and a slightly unhinged sensibility. That shared DNA — one character born of China’s domestic internet culture, the other of a Japanese platform — gave the pairing a built-in foundation for conversation before a single product was announced. Behind the pairing sits a practical link: both IPs are operated in China by Qizhongji, a Xiamen-based rights company founded in 2018 that manages more than 20 sticker characters, including Line Puppy. The shared operator helps explain how two characters from different markets ended up at the same altar. Amplified by the pair’s pronounced size difference, the inversion created dramatic tension and fed young consumers’ appetite for memes and subverted expectations. Content did the work of pushing the collaboration beyond existing fan communities. Before the official announcement, Siam Lip’s Xiaohongshu (also known as RedNote) account teased a melodramatic “marriage contract” promising that “a single document would bind together two people whose fates had become entangled.” A six-part short-form drama, “Wrong Marriage, Right Love,” followed, folding domineering chief executives, feuding wealthy families and an opposites-attract romance into the IP narrative. Rather than displaying products and driving photo opportunities — the conventional collaboration model — the organizers built a narrative arc that recast consumers as guests at a fictional wedding. Turning purchases into wedding gifts: the campaign’s spending twist Offline, the organizers staged the wedding as if it were real. Footage released by Jingfeng Center shows the two characters posing for portraits and moving through a full sequence of rituals — bridal procession, ceremony, banquet — with other Siam Lip characters appearing to offer their “blessings.” The outdoor set was built to follow a real wedding ceremony, turning the mall into an immersive venue: absurd in concept, executed with striking commitment. A sharper twist reframed merchandise purchases as “giving a wedding gift,” a reference to the Chinese custom of contributing cash at weddings. Spending was presented as participation in the celebration rather than a transaction. One consumer told Xinhua she had worn a pink dress to “attend the banquet” and treated her pop-up purchases as gift money for the newlyweds. Ugliness helped too. Rather than following the polished aesthetic of most character merchandise, the collection extended the two IPs’ deliberately awkward visual language and folded in internet references — the self-deprecating “rat person” meme, which captures the tension between wanting to give up and having to keep going, and nods to widely circulated Lady Gaga reaction images. Expressions that had served as emotional shorthand online became physical objects consumers could take home. In a market saturated with polished, conventionally cute IP merchandise, strange and deliberately unattractive designs stood out — and felt more genuine for it. Looking imperfect while connecting emotionally has become a scarce competitive advantage. As IP partnerships multiply, consumers are no longer willing to spend simply because two familiar names appear together. The campaigns that convert attention into revenue will be those that understand younger consumers’ emotions, aesthetics and social behaviors well enough to treat an outrageous idea as a brief rather than a risk.
