CART X brings art cars to New York’s Rétromobile

A Maybach that Jay-Z and Ye, then known as Kanye West, cut apart for a 2011 music video will share the floor with a Land Rover painted by Keith Haring at Manhattan’s Javits Center this month. Larry Warsh, Jing Daily’s publisher and an early collector of Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, is taking his art cars to a classic-car show. His media platform, CART Department, will debut CART X, a program spanning cars, art, music and fashion, at Rétromobile New York, which runs November 19-22. “In their visionary hands, vehicles become more than transportation, status symbols or engineering marvels,” Warsh, founder of CART Department and CART X, said in the announcement. “They become canvases for art and culture.” What art cars from Larry Warsh’s collection will show at Rétromobile in New York? The partnership brings luxury’s crossover playbook to the collector-car floor, pairing the cars with a fashion collaboration and a product sold only at the show. It also coincides with Rétromobile’s first US edition; the fair was founded in Paris in 1976. CART Department will show art cars and related works by Haring, Ai Weiwei (艾未未), Damien Hirst, Jay-Z, Jeff Koons, Shepard Fairey, Zaha Hadid, Barbara Kruger, Daniel Arsham, Esther Mahlangu, Olafur Eliasson, Richard Prince and Kenny Scharf. Among them are Haring’s 1971 Land Rover, painted in 1983 for Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival; Hirst’s “Untitled (Spot Mini),” a Mini Cooper he covered in spots in 2000; Fairey’s 1937 Packard 115C Touring Sedan; and Ai’s BMW covered in LEGO bricks, which first drew attention during his 2015 dispute with the toy maker. Warsh’s Maybach from the “Otis” video is also on show. He has assembled more than 70 one-of-a-kind art cars since 2013, drawing on more than three decades in the art world. Gérard Neveu, chief executive officer of Rétromobile New York, said the fair has long treated cars as “more than mere machines.” Cart Department “brings that same curiosity through the world of contemporary art,” he said. The fashion drop New York fashion label Public School New York, founded by Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, designed uniforms for CART X staff, modeled on vintage satin tour jackets with custom patches and chain-stitch embroidery. The brand and CART Department will also sell a limited-edition long-sleeve T-shirt available only at the four-day show. “Cars have always existed at the intersection of design, culture and personal expression,” said Chow and Osborne. Programming Two sessions are planned at booth 267, home to Barbara Kruger’s school bus. CART and X Tracks Summits will host a VIP gathering from 4pm to 5pm on November 19 to introduce the CART X Tracks Brand Collaborations Summit, a planned invitation-only forum on partnerships between automakers and luxury brands. Art dealer and columnist Kenny Schachter will give an “Art & Cars” talk at the same hour on November 21.
