‘Nezha 2’ becomes world’s highest-grossing animation

Chinese animated film Nezha 2 has surpassed Pixar’s Inside Out 2 to become the highest-grossing animated film globally, with a total box office of RMB 12.3 billion ($1.69 billion), including pre-sales and overseas earnings. The film, which is largely driven by mainland China, has earned over 99% of its revenue domestically, a contrast to Hollywood films' global distribution strategies. A sequel to the 2019 hit Nezha, the film is based on the 16th-century Chinese novel The Investiture of the Gods and follows a magical hero defending a fortress town. Directed by Yang Yu (Jiaozi), Nezha 2 contributed to a record-breaking Chinese New Year box office in mainland China in 2025.
