Chinese tourists cancel 4,572 room nights in Thailand hotels in January
The case of Chinese actor Wang Xing being lured to Myanmar through Thailand has raised concerns about Thailand’s role as a transit hub for human trafficking, contributing to a decline in Chinese tourist visits. According to data from the Thai Hotels Association, Chinese tourists canceled 4,572 room nights in January, with 2,001 cancellations in Bangkok alone. These safety concerns have also affected other Asian markets, leading to 7,856 cancellations across Thailand. In response, the Tourism Council of Thailand is collaborating with the Thailand-China Tourism Association to establish “China-friendly” tourism standards, with 200 travel companies already meeting safety requirements. Despite these challenges, the Tourism Authority of Thailand is still aiming to attract 8.8 to 9 million Chinese tourists this year, part of a broader goal of 39 to 40 million total arrivals.
