Chery delays European EV production

Chery Automobile has delayed its plan to begin electric vehicle (EV) production in Europe by a year, targeting October 2025 for the launch of its Omoda 5 EV in Spain, following the EU’s imposition of provisional tariffs on Chinese EV imports. The tariffs, which add up to 38%, have forced automakers like Chery to reconsider their strategies, while EU and Chinese officials negotiate potential solutions. Chery’s partnership with Spain’s Ebro-EV Motors aims to create 1,250 jobs at a former Nissan plant in Barcelona, but production delays have caused friction with unionized workers. Chery also plans to launch Ebro-branded SUVs and now faces pressure to balance its investment with new tariff regulations.
