Inside Jing Daily 100’s Shanghai Fashion Week launch

On October 16, Jing Daily marked the publication of its inaugural Jing Daily 100 list with a celebration at The St. Regis on the Bund in Shanghai. The evening, held during Shanghai Fashion Week, brought together executives, designers, artists, media figures and content creators. Jing Daily Editor-in-Chief Enrique Menéndez opened the evening. Khadija Al Bastaki, senior vice president of Dubai Design District (d3), then spoke on creative-industry ties between China and the United Arab Emirates. Jing Daily Chief Operating Officer Stephen Morgan moderated a panel with AnTang, general manager of Tmall Luxury, and Rebecca Cai, chief global markets officer of On, on shifting Chinese consumer behavior and where the next growth in China’s premium and luxury markets will come from. Selected jointly by Jing Daily’s editorial teams in China, Europe and the United States, the list honors the executives, brand founders, designers, artists, media figures and cultural leaders shaping luxury and culture in China. Menéndez welcomed guests and congratulated the honorees. He reflected on the range of creative and business leaders gathered for the evening, and on Jing Daily’s longstanding mission to chronicle the evolution of China’s luxury industry and cultural landscape. Dubai Design District on building China-UAE fashion and design ties Al Bastaki outlined d3’s work developing creative talent and building international partnerships, and pointed to growing ties between China and the UAE in fashion and design. Part of Dubai’s TECOM Group, d3 is a business district for design and fashion companies, and in 2023 it co-founded Dubai Fashion Week with the Arab Fashion Council. What Tmall Luxury and On see in the shifting Chinese luxury consumer Discussion centered on how Chinese consumers are reassessing what they buy and why, as they put more weight on experiences, well-being, comfort, cultural identity and lifestyle, and on what that shift means for how luxury brands build lasting appeal. AnTang, drawing on Tmall Luxury’s perspective, discussed changes in Chinese consumers’ purchasing behavior and brand preferences, and the evolving role of digital platforms in luxury. Cai spoke about shifts in consumer lifestyles. Both addressed the convergence of online and offline retail and the forces likely to shape China’s premium consumer market over the next five years. Chinese designers from Guo Pei to MARKGONG compete on the global stage Chinese designers from several generations attended, among them couturier Guo Pei (郭培) and younger designers building international profiles. Designers in attendance included MARKGONG founder Gong Ziming (龚子铭), CHENPENG founder Chen Peng (陈鹏), RUIbuilt founder Zhou Rui (周睿), 8ON8 founder Gong Li (龚力), SHUSHU/TONG co-founders Lei Liushu (雷留树) and Jiang Yutong (蒋雨彤), and SAMUEL GUÌ YANG founder Samuel Gui Yang (杨桂东) and co-creative director Erik Litzén. They were joined by YVMIN co-founders Zhang Xiaoyu (张晓宇) and Li Min (李忞), AO YES co-founders Wang Yingchao (王颖超) and Liu Yansong (刘炎松), PRONOUNCE co-founders Li Yushan (李雨山) and Zhou Jun (周俊), TysGrocery founder Wang Tianhao (王天皓), and Wang Fengchen (王逢陈), who designs under the label Feng Chen Wang. Their presence pointed to a broader change: China is now a source of designers who compete internationally, as well as a market for global fashion and luxury. RUIbuilt was one of eight labels founded by Chinese designers that showed on the Paris Fashion Week schedule for spring/summer 2025, according to Luxe.co, and Blackpink’s Lisa wore custom MARKGONG on the 2025 Oscars red carpet. Media, art and influencer figures round out the Jing Daily 100 guest list Beyond fashion design, guests included Alex Sun, CEO of Marie Claire China, W China and Fantastic Man China; Dazed China Editor-in-Chief Audrey Hu; Gao Ming, senior vice president and managing director of luxury, Greater China, at Ruder Finn; and Wendy Yu, an investor and supporter of Chinese designers. Also present were X Museum co-founder Michael Xufu Huang, artist Oscar Wang, MATIERE PREMIERE founder Aurélien Guichard and his wife, Marion Guichard, NOWRE co-founders Peter Zhong and Chris Wang, ENG Concept founder Sherry Huang, DOE co-founder Terry Zhu, and Le Monde de SHC founder Eric Young. Fashion influencers Fil Xiaobai, Hachi, Mate Li, Molly Chiang, Mia Kong, Ava Foo and Xiao Yang Bure also attended, as did Dr. Qin Huilan (覃惠兰), a retired doctor who walked Miu Miu’s Fall/Winter 2024 show in Paris. Musician Cacien (卡西恩), a Jing Daily 100 honoree, performed live. The Shenzhen-born singer-songwriter and producer, whose real name is Chen Sixian (陈思娴), mixes pop, R&B, jazz and hip-hop in her music. Created to document the people shaping China’s luxury and creative industries, the list draws on Jing Daily’s 17 years of covering the sector and is intended to introduce their work to readers beyond China.
