Multiple Chinese airlines suspended or reduced Japan flights following diplomatic tensions, with 12 China-Japan routes completely canceled as of November 24. Flight Master DAST data shows cancellation rates for Japan-bound flights are expected to reach 21.6% by December 27. Most affected routes include Tianjin-Osaka (65% canceled), Nanjing-Osaka (59.4%), Guangzhou-Osaka (31.3%), and Shanghai-Osaka (30.1%). Major carriers implemented free cancellation policies. The downturn follows China’s November 14 advisory warning citizens to avoid Japan travel. Chinese tourists are shifting to Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, and Bali. Nomura Research Institute estimates the decline could reduce Japan’s GDP by 0.36%, representing approximately 2.2 trillion Japanese yen ($14.6 billion) in economic losses.
