China issues Japan travel warning

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a travel advisory on November 14, urging citizens to avoid travel to Japan due to deteriorating public safety and provocative remarks concerning Taiwan. The warning sparked widespread concern, with many Chinese travelers canceling bookings. Despite Japan welcoming over 30 million visitors in the first nine months of 2025, weaknesses are emerging. While total tourist spending grew 11.1% YoY to 2.13 trillion Japanese yen ($14.1 billion) last quarter, per-capita spending declined. The warning compounds challenges for Japanese tourism, with airlines dependent on China-Japan routes facing potential schedule cuts. Meanwhile, Vietnam welcomed 3.53 million Chinese tourists in early 2025 — a 44% YoY increase.
