Thailand continues to feel the impact of safety-related concerns among Chinese tourists, with arrivals from China sharply down and many China-focused travel agencies suspending operations. According to a report by The Nation on June 16, the Thai Travel Agents Association estimates that only 5 million Chinese tourists may visit Thailand this year, mostly for business, with just around 1 million joining tour groups. Malaysia has overtaken China as Thailand’s top source of international visitors, recording over 2.04 million arrivals between January 1 and June 8, slightly ahead of China. Confidence among Chinese travelers has remained low since January, when actor Wang Xing was kidnapped near the Thai-Myanmar border.
