EU, China begin talks on minimum EV prices

The European Union and China have agreed to begin discussions on setting minimum prices for Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs) as an alternative to the steep EU tariffs introduced in 2023, according to an EU spokesperson. While the EU previously imposed tariffs of up to 45.3% on Chinese EVs, including rates of 17.0% for BYD, 18.8% for Geely, and 35.3% for SAIC, both sides are now considering “price undertakings” to avoid further escalation. Observers believe the U.S. pressure played a role in prompting the EU and China to seek a negotiated solution.
