EU-China EV tariff talks stall as tensions mount

Negotiations between the EU and China to find an alternative to tariffs on EVs are making minimal progress, with little hope for a swift resolution, according to people familiar with the matter, as reported by Bloomberg. Technical talks continue after recent discussions in Beijing, but China has yet to meet the EU’s strict enforceability standards equivalent to the bloc’s recent anti-subsidy tariffs. Both sides are exploring price control mechanisms to avoid tariffs, focusing on establishing communication channels and preventing cross-compensation, though disagreements persist, including whether to allow individual carmaker agreements.
