Alipay sees 60% jump in outbound tourism transactions
During the 2024 National Day Golden Week, Alipay reported a substantial rise in both outbound and inbound tourism spending. Outbound transactions surged over 60% YoY, with Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Singapore as top destinations. Chinese travelers shifted focus from shopping to local experiences, leading to increased spending on services, transportation, and entertainment. Notably, the use of Alipay’s real-time tax refund services rose by 130%. Inbound spending by international travelers using Alipay increased 120% YoY, with travelers from over 10 countries benefiting from China’s visa-free policy spending three times more. Alipay’s new services, such as Alipay Tap! and the AI assistant Zhixiaobao, also saw significant growth, with a 130% increase in spending through Alipay Tap! and a 40% rise in daily active users for life assistant app Zhixiaobao. Additionally, Alipay+ has expanded to support 13 e-wallets, facilitating seamless payments for overseas consumers across China’s vast merchant network.
