BYD taps Huawei for premium EV autonomous driving system
Chinese automaker BYD is partnering with Huawei to integrate its advanced autonomous driving system (ADS) into BYD’s upcoming Fangchengbao brand electric vehicle (EV). The Bao 8 SUV, set to launch in late 2024, will be the first to feature Huawei’s Qiankun ADS. BYD aims to boost sales and profitability for its premium Denza, Fangchengbao, and Yangwang brands, which collectively represented only 5% of BYD’s sales in the first half of 2024. This collaboration is part of BYD’s broader strategy to strengthen its market position and compete with global automakers like Hyundai and Volkswagen, who have multiple successful brands. Despite past skepticism about self-driving technology, BYD has invested $14 billion in smart car tech, including autonomous driving software, signaling a significant shift in its approach to the future of automotive technology.
