Shiseido posts loss despite sales growth following China exits

Shiseido’s H1 2024 report shows a 2.9% sales increase to 508.5 billion yen ($1.7 billion) but an operating loss of 2.7 billion yen ($18 million). Q2 net sales dropped 4% to 249.7 billion yen ($844 million). Key brands saw varied results: Shiseido main brand down 6%, Nars down 7%, IPSA down 23%, CPB up 1%, and Drunk Elephant up 30%. Regionally, Japan saw a 13.3% sales increase, China dropped 6.6% to about $9.2 million, the Asia-Pacific market grew 5.9%, the Americas fell 5.4%, and EMEA rose 11.8%. Notably, Shiseido’s mid-to-high-end brands Ipsa and Baum have exited the Chinese market this year.
