Gold, plush toys lead Taobao’s Chinese Valentine’s Day sales

Taobao yesterday revealed its 2024 Qixi Festival Gift Report, uncovering significant trends. Gold item sales surged 255%, driven by investment gold and valuable jewelry, while plush toys rose by 216%, with stuffed animal bouquets seeing a notable increase. Chinese-style Lego sales grew by 259%, and My Little Pony cards skyrocketed over 14 times. Film star merchandise sales were up 144%, and preserved flowers increased by 88.8%. New Chinese-style gifts doubled in sales, with Hetian jade bracelets rising 17-fold. Fortune-related items saw over a 6-fold increase, and golden luck bead bracelets surged by 818%. Interest in gold from younger generations surpassed that of older ones, and items like Light and Night cards and Pop Mart blind boxes were among the top gifts. The report highlights shifting consumer preferences and offers opportunities for businesses in jewelry, toys, and national culture products.
