As ‘Cityboat’ takes off, urban micro-getaways get a new twist

What happened On Beijing’s Liangma River, dubbed by some online as the city’s “Seine” for its waterfront setting and atmosphere, kayaks and paddleboards crowd the water on weekends. Urban rivers once valued largely for their scenery have become spaces for exercise, socializing and short-form leisure. More people are moving their attention from land to water, taking to rivers, lakes and canals for what has come to be known as Cityboat. If Citywalk is about rediscovering the city on foot, and “Cityride” about exploring it by bike, Cityboat (or city boating) shifts the perspective to the water. Kayaks, paddleboards and other small craft offer a different way to move through — and see — familiar urban spaces. Similar scenes are visible in cities across China, with Hangzhou’s dense canal and river network making it an early center for the activity. The Jing Take Cityboat had already begun entering the public consciousness by 2023, but its momentum has accelerated this summer. Tiaodao Outdoor, a watersports and outdoor lifestyle company, is among those shaping the trend. Kunshu, the company’s founder, told Jing Daily that Cityboat-related projects have been growing year-on-year, based on his own observations and experience in the sector. Who is actually paddling: Cityboat draws 25 to 45, not just Gen Z The audience is broader than the very young. Most participants fall into two age groups — 25 to 34 and 35 to 45 — with the two segments roughly equal in size, Kunshu said. Younger consumers, in particular, tend to see Cityboat as a novel urban experience, often tied to dating and socializing. Water-based activities are naturally suited to summer, but Cityboat’s appeal is not entirely seasonal. Asked whether interest would fade in fall, Kunshu said changing weather may reduce participation among those simply trying it out. Some first-timers become committed water-sports enthusiasts, treating each season as a different experience on the water. That makes Cityboat’s commercial value less dependent on a short-lived summer spike. As it shifts from a one-off novelty to an established leisure habit, hotels and brands are moving into the space more actively. How hotel luxury experiences are turning kayaking into a reason to book For hotels, the value of water sports goes beyond adding another amenity. It gives guests a new reason to stay. As short-haul travel and local micro-getaways gain ground, more hotels are folding boat rides and kayaking into their accommodation packages, turning a night’s stay into a broader experience that combines movement with destination discovery. Hilton Shenzhen Shekou Nanhai offers one example. The hotel recently introduced a Cityboat kayaking experience, providing instructors, safety guidance and equipment, according to the property. Guests do not need to arrange separate transport or search for another venue; after kayaking, they return to the hotel. The experience places accommodation and water activities within the same consumer journey. As more consumers take to the water, Cityboat is also becoming a setting for brands to reach younger audiences. In July, Tiaodao Outdoor partnered with herbal liquor brand Jing Liquor on a floating music event. Jing Liquor, produced by Hubei-based Jing Brand, has long been associated with health-focused drinking and is now using new products and settings to reach younger consumers. This year it launched a “music bottle” that uses NFC: consumers can tap the bottle with their phones to generate a song based on their preferences. The brand is also promoting the liquor as a cocktail base, moving it into parties and social gatherings. Tiaodao brought that product idea into a Cityboat setting. Participants took boats onto urban waterways, watched live music, tried the product and used the NFC feature to generate personalized songs. Water, music, alcohol and socializing became part of one experience, turning an abstract message about rejuvenating the brand into something consumers could participate in. Compared with mall pop-ups or bar parties, a waterside setting carries greater novelty, participation and social-media appeal. Consumers are not simply arriving to “see the brand”; they encounter it while paddling, listening to music and spending time with others. Commercial potential here extends well beyond water sports. Drinks, outdoor gear, fashion, sunscreen, beauty and hospitality can all use the setting to rethink consumer experience. Access is the constraint. Rules on where small craft can go vary sharply by city, and brands planning on-water activations are working to local regimes rather than a national one.
