UK’s Starmer discusses whisky tariffs with Xi Jinping

Keir Starmer has discussed whisky tariffs in his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping during his trip to China. The Prime Minister said he made “good progress” on talks regarding tariffs and visa-free travel to China. He met Xi at the Great Hall of the People on the first morning of his trip, the first by a U.K. prime minister since 2018. Starmer said the meeting produced “real outcomes” on tariffs for whisky, visa-free travel, and cooperation on irregular migration. China said it was willing to “actively consider” implementing unilateral visa-free entry for the U.K. Starmer arrived with a delegation of 54 representatives of British businesses and cultural institutions.
