China, EU reach consensus on EV deal

China’s Ministry of Commerce announced on January 12 that China and the EU reached consensus to provide guidance on price commitments for Chinese EV exporters to the EU. This agreement, seen as a “soft landing” by Chinese industry groups, aims to resolve trade concerns through a practical and WTO-compliant approach. The mechanism allows Chinese EV makers to avoid higher tariffs by submitting detailed price commitments, including minimum prices and investment plans, for EU review. Analysts view the move as a positive step providing more predictability for trade, shifting from unilateral tariffs to negotiated solutions. Both sides expressed commitment to maintaining stable automotive supply chains.
