Bali’s provincial government is drafting a regulation requiring foreign tourists to disclose three months of bank statements and detailed travel plans upon entry. The proposed rule, part of a “high-quality tourism” initiative, aims to ensure visitors have sufficient funds and respect local customs, according to Governor Wayan Koster. The announcement has drawn criticism for privacy concerns and potential impact on Bali’s reputation as an accessible destination. Tourists from countries using visa-on-arrival — such as China — could face longer processing times. The move comes as Bali struggles with overtourism, hosting about 29 million visitors in 2024, nearly seven times its resident population.
