Hainan duty-free sales surge over holiday

Hainan’s offshore duty-free market saw strong growth during the 2026 New Year holiday (January 1-3). Sales surged 128.9% YoY to 7.12 billion RMB ($989 million), with footfall rising 60.6% to 83,500 visits. Major retailers drove momentum through promotions, tourism-linked shopping events, and free shuttle services. The expansion of duty-free categories — including mini-drones and electric guitars under a November 2025 policy — also boosted spending. Haikou Customs supported holiday sales with streamlined supervision, including full product traceability and online tax payment options for excess purchases.
