German auto exports to US drop 14% in 2025
German auto exports to the U.S. fell nearly 14% in the first three quarters of 2025, the hardest-hit sector under new U.S. tariff policies, per a Reuters study. Effective August 1, the U.S. imposed a 15% base tariff on European car imports. German machinery exports to the U.S. dropped 9.5% during the same period, partly due to 50% U.S. tariffs on imported steel and aluminum machinery. German chemical exports to the U.S. declined 9.5%. Overall, German exports to the U.S. fell 7.8% YoY in the first three quarters, versus average growth of nearly 5% from 2016 to 2024.
