Mexico approves up to 50% tariffs on China imports
Mexico’s Congress approved a tariff package targeting imports from China and countries without free trade agreements. The new tariffs, up to 50%, take effect in January and apply to over 1,400 products, including textiles, shoes, appliances, vehicles, and auto parts. China, Mexico’s second-largest import source with $130 billion in trade in 2024, will be most affected. Analysts say the tariffs aim to appease the U.S. ahead of a USMCA review. President Claudia Sheinbaum seeks relief from lingering U.S. tariffs, as the Trump administration accused China of using Mexico as a backdoor into the U.S. market.
