Sunrise Duty-Free loses Beijing, Shanghai monopoly

Sunrise Duty-Free, the first foreign-funded operator authorized to run airport duty-free shops in China, is set to lose its monopoly at Beijing and Shanghai airports starting in 2026. The operator, which has run shops at these locations for 26 years, will be excluded from upcoming competitive bidding for new duty-free contracts. China Duty-Free Group, which holds a majority stake in Sunrise, has opposed its participation in the Shanghai airport tender. New bidding rules at both airports include anti-monopoly measures, preventing any single company from operating in multiple major terminals. The change is expected to intensify competition and aligns with national policies to diversify duty-free operators.
