A product livestream for British label Self-Portrait in China drew significant online criticism, spotlighting parent company Ellassay Group. The event featuring actress Zhu Zhu was hosted by reality TV personality Weng Qingya, whose repeated mistakes — including mispronouncing the brand name and providing incorrect product information — trended on Weibo. Ellassay acknowledged “clear deficiencies” and initiated a comprehensive review but didn’t address host selection criteria. The company removed the livestream replay, fueling skepticism. Ellassay acquired mainland China ownership of Self-Portrait in late 2019. According to the group’s 2025 interim report, Self-Portrait generated revenue of 285 million RMB ($39 million) and operated 76 stores.
