Chinese seniors over 60 drive premium travel growth

Travelers aged 60 and above in China are increasingly shaping tourism trends as a high-spending, tech-adaptive demographic, according to a new report from Tongcheng Travel. The “2025 Silver-Haired Traveler Consumption Trends Report,” released for the Double Ninth Festival, highlights their strong preference for quality and growing use of AI tools. These seniors spend over 30% more on accommodation than younger travelers, favoring mid-to-high-star hotels. They also form the core market for premium offerings such as luxury and polar cruises, long-haul international trips, and customized tours, where their average spending exceeds 12,000 RMB ($1,690) — 25% higher than other age groups. The emergence of “new-age seniors” — those born after 1965 — is accelerating this shift, actively engaging in social media-inspired “punch-in” travel. Notably, Tongcheng’s AI travel assistant, DeepTrip, gained over 200,000 elderly users within six months.
