US apparel imports from China plunge 52% in May
U.S. apparel imports from China fell 52% YoY in May to the lowest level in 22 years. China’s share of the US apparel import market fell below 10% for the first time, accounting for just 9.9%. According to University of Delaware Professor Sheng Lu, citing U.S. International Trade Commission data, punitive tariffs up to 145% imposed by the Trump administration led to an effective average tariff rate of 69.1% on Chinese apparel in May. This drove overall average tariffs on U.S. apparel imports to a record 23.8%. Vietnam became the largest supplier with 21.7% market share.
