China’s urban jobless rate falls for 3rd consecutive month

China’s surveyed unemployment rate in urban areas dropped to 5% in May, falling 0.1 percentage points from the previous month and marking a continuous decline since March. The rate has steadily decreased from 5.4% in February to 5.2% in March, 5.1% in April, and now 5% in May. The unemployment rate in China’s 31 major cities including Beijing and Shanghai was also about 5% in May, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Fu Linghui, spokesman of the NBS, attributed the stable employment landscape to the growing economy, strong government policy support, and dynamic industries. The government has implemented stronger supportive policies including recruitment subsidies for employers, job-seeking assistance, and enhanced skills training programs.
