China car sales grow 1.3% in Q1

China’s passenger car sales rose 13.9% YoY in May to 1.96 million units, marking the fourth straight month of growth but signaling a slowdown from April’s 14.8% increase, according to the China Passenger Car Association. Electric and hybrid vehicle sales grew 28.2%, down from 33.9% in April. Leading EV maker BYD saw its growth rate ease to 14.1% despite new incentives. Geely Automobile Holdings and Chery Automobile Company also reported decelerating sales as intensifying price competition raised concerns of a market shakeout. Auto exports rebounded in May, up 13.5% YoY after a 2% decline in April.
